Paper Recycling Project at the University of the West Indies
The Maintenance Services Department of The University of the West Indies (UWI) in collaboration with Garbage Sanitation and Disposal Systems is in the process of implementing a cost-effective recycling project at the UWI, Mona campus. The project has as its primary objectives introducing an environmentally sound, sustainable mechanism for waste disposal at the UWI; reducing cost of waste collection and disposal at UWI; and generating additional income for expansion of programs implemented by the Maintenance Services Department.
The project, is scheduled to begin on July 1, and will be introduced as a pilot project in all UWI offices and entities on campus. The project will commence with the recycling of waste paper generated by the staff of the university and staff of other entities on campus. Receptacles, which will be provided by Garbage Sanitation and Disposal Systems, will be placed at strategic locations near each office. Heads of Departments are being asked to encourage staff and janitors in each department to separate waste paper from other waste materials. Only waste paper should be placed in the receptacles. Other waste materials will be picked up as per usual.
The participation of members of the campus community in this project is vital to its success. Not only will it assist the University in minimizing cost of garbage collection and disposal but it will also assist with generating much needed income for the University. In the long term, not only will the project have economic implications but the University will be able to showcase an environmentally friendly model for other campuses and the wider society to follow.
