The Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine

The Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other health professions was launched by Prime Minister P.J. Patterson on July 14 at Jamaica House in Kingston. The Accreditation Authority has been established based on a proposal initiated by UWI Vice Chancellor, Prof. the Hon. Rex Nettleford for the establishment of an independent authority for education in medicine and other health professions. The proposal was developed in collaboration with CARICOM and Health and Education Ministers from around the region. The Authority replaces the UK General Medical Council Accreditation which was phased out in 2003. It will have responsibility for setting international standards of quality education for health education programmes in the region. It will also establish the accreditation process for health education institutions throughout the region. Speakers at the launch ceremony included Prof. Nettleford. Trinidad and Tobago High Commissioner to Jamaica, H. E. Denis Francis, Minister of Health, the Hon. John Junor and Minister of Education Youth and Culture, the Hon. Maxine Henry Wilson.
