Professor Errol Miller Receives Education International Albert Shanker Award
Professor of Teacher Education in the Institute of Teacher Education at the UWI, Mona Campus, Professor Errol Miller, has been named the recipient of the 2004 Education International Albert Shanker Education Award. The Albert Shanker Award is given to a teacher or other education employee in recognition of an outstanding personal contribution to education. The awardee’s professional action must have demonstrated that quality education requires quality teachers and education employees. Awardees must also have demonstrated a commitment to educational excellence and the promotion of democracy, social justice and equality through education. Education International, which gives the award, is a world-wide Trade Union Organisation of Education Personnel, whose 26 million members represent all sectors of education from pre-school to university, national trade unions and associations in 162 countries and territories. Professor Miller is a past president of the Jamaica Teachers Association and was nominated for the award by the Association.
