The 8th Biennial Staff Intercampus Games
The recently concluded 8th Biennial Staff Intercampus Games saw the Mona Campus copping five of the eight titles contested, over the Cave Hill and St. Augustine Campuses. The Games were keenly contested from July 19 to July 24, 2004 at the Mona Bowl. There were competitions in Netball, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, Track, and Cricket.
The Mona Netball team won convincingly overall when they demonstrated their dominance in the final match, by crushing St. Augustine 32 goals to 11. A similar fate was met by their football team that same evening, when they trounced St. Augustine by 8 goals – 1. Mona ended a 16 year drought in Cricket and removed Cave Hill’s grip on the trophy by defeating them and the immediate defender, St. Augustine. On the final day of the Games, St. Augustine decided that they would not return to Trinidad with only one trophy, so they gave Mona and Cave Hill a run for their money by placing first in Athletics with 256 points, Mona followed with 229 and Cave Hill with 191 points.
Mona was therefore champions in Football, Netball, Cricket, Table Tennis, Basketball; St. Augustine won Volleyball and Athletics while Cave Hill won Lawn Tennis. Overall the Games went well and though rivalry existed during each game, the participants socialized each evening as each campus played host to the others by showcasing its island’s cuisine. The next Games are scheduled for the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados in the summer of 2006.
