As Caribbean economies reposition and restructure their operations to achieve significantly higher and more sustainable levels of economic growth, the call by policymakers and public commentators for the higher-education sector and, in particular, the university sector to become more activist in the quest for growth, has also increased. 

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Office of Administration is pleased to announce the appointment of two new Deans at the Mona Campus in Jamaica. Professor Michael Taylor is the new Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology and Professor David Tennant is the new Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The Mona campus of the University of the West Indies last year led the charts in the value of scholarships disbursed across its three main campuses, and their alumni and businesses were big donors.

Of the approximately $870 million disbursed, the Mona campus had annual scholarships valued at $757 million.

On Wednesday, July 12, 2018, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAJ) with the mutual objectives of providing training and consultancy services on business-related topics pertinent to private and public organizations, entrepreneurs, small businesses and start-up companies.

Seventeen people who have made outstanding contributions regionally and internationally within their respective fields will be awarded honorary degrees by The University of the West Indies (UWI) at its graduation ceremonies later this year.

Allison Peart, FCA, FCPA, BSc, chairman of the taxation committee, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica (ICAJ), was named Most Outstanding Chairperson of the Year at the institute's annual general meeting last week at the Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston.

Peart is the country managing partner and tax partner at Ernst & Young (Jamaica).

As of today, August 1, The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona will have Professor Dale Webber as its new Campus Principal and Professor Ian Boxill as its Deputy Campus Principal.

Webber and Boxill will be taking over from Professor Archibald McDonald and Professor Ishenkumba Kahwa respectively.
