Promoting Green ICTs: High School Essay Competition 2010/11

Deadline Now Extended to March 15, 2011

Essay Topic: Information and Communication Technologies neither contribute to nor offer solutions for Caribbean environmental degradation.

The Telecommunications Policy and Management (TPM) Programme, Mona School of Business, UWI, Mona, in collaboration with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) invites essay contributions from high school students to address the topic of how ICTs can impact the environment.

The rapid development of ICTs globally and in the Caribbean presents a number of challenges for the environment. The focus of international policy is moving toward Green Technology and how we can use technology to preserve the environment. But, the technology itself often poses a threat to the environment. Therefore, ICTs can represent both a problem and a solution to the environmental challenges we face.

Today, young people are among the major users of technology and represent the next generation of developers of technology. Students should seek to examine the environmental impact of ICTs, how this affects the way we live, work and play, and present solutions which may be employed as we seek to preserve the environment in the Caribbean.

Open to High School Students 15-19 years old.
