Brachytherapy

Semester 1

Training course designed to expose the resident to the most common techniques utilized in modern brachytherapy. Students will be actively involved in the preparation and calibration of brachytherapy sources, and the image acquisition and treatment planning of patients undergoing brachytherapy. Brachytherapy (BT) has long been among the treatment options, for cancer patients especially with regard to local boost applications. In terms of the effectiveness of treatment, studies have shown that brachytherapy is comparable to external beam radiotherapy and surgery when treating many types of cancer, while patients generally experience fewer side effects after brachytherapy compared with other treatment options. The medical physicist should possess good practical
knowledge of brachytherapy to perform the required day to day functions.

4. Carry out quality control checks of sealed radiation sources for brachytherapy
