It is my pleasure to welcome you to The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. As a global university which gives preeminence to supporting regional development, it is our goal to provide all our students with an excellent educational experience.
We have further reaffirmed our commitment in light of the recent challenges associated with the Covid-19 pandemic. The training that we offer will only be meaningful if it is brought to bear on the policy conversations of the day and lead to innovation and stimulate economic growth.
The last few months have brought to the fore some of the most pressing development needs that must be addressed if we are to realize the regional redevelopment that we have envisioned. The need for academic work to be better aligned of to the needs of the society, especially those of the various business industries, is greater than ever before.
As a Times Higher Education (THE) top 4% ranked university, we are acutely aware that graduate studies and research provide the niche differential which sets The UWI apart from our competitors. You are now a part of that differential. We hope that you will see your time here as an opportunity to further equip yourselves to take your place in charting the course of this region’s development. This development will require you to embrace inter-disciplinary work; understand your place in your communities, this region and the world; work to bridge the digital divide; and safeguard the rights of all people. Essentially, as leaders of today and tomorrow, your role is to learn how to harness the diverse human and physical resources to respond to these challenges.
On behalf of your UWI family, I welcome you to this new and exciting phase of your academic journey and career. We are committed to supporting you as work towards supporting national and regional development.
