M.A. Higher Education: Student Personnel Administration

 

Programme Overview

 


This programme is designed to meet the needs of incumbent Student Personnel Practitioners or for students seeking careers in university or college student personnel services or administration by:
 
(a) Heightening the sensitivity of participants to the needs of their clients
(b) Providing them with the relevant knowledge and skills to perform their duties effectively.
 
The two year programme consists of eight (8) taught courses and an internship. Participants will write a report of the internship experiences. This will constitute the research study requirement of the Masters programme.
 

Objectives
The Masters of Arts in Higher Education–Student Personnel Administration is designed to meet the needs of:

  • Incumbent student personnel administrators requiring formal academic Qualification
  • Students seeking careers in university/college student services and administration

 

Admission Requirements
Candidates for admission must qualify under the general university regulations for a master’s degree:
 
M.Ed. Degree - Entry Requirements (For the Particular Programme):
 
1. (A)    A first degree at or above the Lower Second Honours Levels; or a grade point   
              average equivalent to a B or above, unless the Campus Committee in any particular 
              case otherwise decides.
    (B)    A professional qualification in teaching such as a postgraduate diploma or certificate, 
             or an approved  equivalent.  Full documentation of the applicant’s academic record 
             and referees’ reports must be submitted to Graduate Studies and Research, Mona.
Equivalents
2.     Applicants with a U.W.I. B. Ed. degree gained before the honours classifications were introduced (between 1970-1985), must have a minimum of B grade average.  Applicants who graduated before 1970 must have a minimum of B in their research study.
 
3.     Applicants with a Pass Degree will be considered only in exceptional cases where the candidate’s professional experience and performance suggest further intellectual development.  Such special applications are subject to the approval of the Board for Graduate Studies.
