Technical Vocation Education & Training (TVET)



Programme Overview

The University of the West Indies is committed to regional development through education and training. Since TVET and WFD play critical roles in sustainable, social, ecological, and economic development of any nation, it is important for the University to be involved in training in leadership in the area.
Graduates of this advanced level programme will be prepared to meet the needs of public and private sector industrial organizations, training institutions, and Ministries of Education for individuals who are capable and prepared to provide capacity building, quality training, and leadership to monitor and guide developments in TVET and WFD.


Target Group

This programme targets the following groups/individuals:

  • Educational leaders in institutions with full or partial TVET curricula
  • Training managers and coordinators in public and private organizations
  • School principals and administrators (at all levels of the school system)
  • Field operations and programme officers of Ministries of Education
  • Technical and field officers of other Ministries of Government
  • Managers and technical staff of National Training Agencies
  • Managers/coordinators of skills training programme in NGO’s
  • Educators/instructors interested in upward mobility in TVET systems
  • Engineers and technologists interested in training and Workforce Development

This programme is designed to achieve the following objectives:

1)    To satisfy the demands of CARICOM region for new TVET leaders who can design, manage and support TVET and workforce development programmes.
2)    To encourage, facilitate and guide new quality research and development activities in TVET to inform policy and workforce development.
3)    To provide a professional development track for TVET practitioners to improve their leadership capacity.
4)    To provide qualified instructional leaders with new skills and capabilities to improve the quality of existing TVET programmes and to enhance the quality and performance of TVET institutions in the region.
5)    To prepare candidates for doctoral studies in the areas of TVET and WFD.
6)    To develop researchers in the field of TVET and WFD.
