Science Education

Programme Overview


The Bachelor of Education is a professional degree which is normally intended for practitioners in the field of education. This degree will be awarded to persons who satisfactorily complete the programme:   
 
Scheme A    Two-Year Programme – 66 credits (Trained non-graduate)
Scheme B    Three-Year Programme- 90 credits (Pre-trained non- graduate)

The Science option is designed to meet the needs of the teacher and other qualified individuals who want to pursue a first degree in Education with strong subject content. In developing countries such as those in the Caribbean, there is an urgent need for citizens to appreciate how much the principles of science can be applied in many aspects of their daily activities. Science teachers play an essential role in achieving this objective. However, in many schools, students complain that science is difficult and uninteresting and too often students are unable to apply the principles of science in relevant areas of their everyday lives.

 

Programme Objectives

The B.Ed.  Science programme offers opportunities for students to deepen their subject content knowledge and knowledge of the nature, scope and applications of science. In addition, it provides opportunities for participants to develop competencies in a wide array of learner-centred instructional strategies and techniques; assessment for learning and assessment of learning; integrating technology in instruction and planning lessons to satisfy the requirements of local and regional  science curricula.

Students focus on the Foundations of Education and Educational Theory and Professional Specialization Courses in the School of Education and pursue content courses in Life.

Admission Requirements

Diploma from a Teachers College ( No GPA requirement) – Scheme A (66 credits)
Students must have at least one science subject at the CSEC level if the diploma is not in an area of intended specialization. They will also be required to do preliminary science subjects in the Faculty of Science and Technology to complete the degree

• Two (2) Cape subjects ( 2 units each) at least one in the intended area of specialization (Biology, Chemistry of Physics )  with grades 1-5- Scheme B ( 90 credits)

Careers after Graduation

Students who have successfully completed the Bachelor of Education programme are qualified to:

  • Teach at all levels of the education system.
  • Pursue graduate studies in Educational Psychology, Science Education, Mathematics Education, Curriculum Development, Educational Administration, Educational Measurement, Language Education, Literacy Studies, Mathematics Education, Modern Languages (Spanish Education), Primary Education, Social Studies/Geography Education, Leadership in Technical and Vocational Education and Training and Workforce Development and Teacher Education and Teacher Development and other areas in education
  • Work as Education Officers with the Ministry of Education
  • Work as Training Specialists in Corporate Jamaica
  • Work as School Administrators
  • School Librarian
