Indoor Football Comes to Mona

Futsal is a variant of association football that is played on a smaller playing surface and mainly played indoors. Its name is derived from the Portuguese futebol de salão and the Spanish fútbol de salón (and coloquially fútbol sala), which can be translated as "hall football." On March 6th, 2010 Futsal will once again be on show at the UWI Mona as the Sports Department in association with RD Sports presents the 2nd Annual UWI Futsal Tournament in the UWI Gymnasium starting at 8:30am.

The tournament is a part of the Sports Department’s aims of creating new and exciting ways to increase student’s participation in sports and to use sports as a form of entertainment for students and staff on campus. This competition promises to be fun, creative and intriguing as students from all across the campus and invitational teams get an opportunity to parade their skills and prove why they should be crowned 2010 champions of the tournament. With a 1st place prize money of $15,000 plus gifts, and a 2nd place prize money of $5,000 plus gifts the tournament offers the finalists’ good take home value. Added to that, there are individual prizes for best goalkeeper and the golden boot award for the leading goals scorer. Only the first 16 teams that sign up will be allowed into the events, and the event is structured into four groups comprising four teams each with the winner of each group progressing to the finals. The entry fee for teams is $2,000 and entry forms are available at the Sports Department or by calling 442-4535. The closing date for entries is March 4th. Only sneakers will be allowed as footwear for the event. The defending champions are Superbad FC who last year walked away with $13,000 and the winning trophy.

On March 6th, team up with your comrades and see if you have the skills to be crowned “UWI Futsal Champions!!”
