Members of the UWI Cricket team

Captain Paul Palmer praised the effort of his team after UWI walked away champions in the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) 2012 Junior Cup Championship. The University of the West Indies Cricket team defeated Kingston Cricket Club (KCC) in the two day championship finals over the weekend. The Pelicans exerted their superiority in the game with a come from behind win to take home the cup after Kingston were leading 152 all out to UWI's 111 at the end of their first innings at the close of day one on Saturday.

The Pelicans returned on Sunday with victory in mind and quickly ousted KCC who were restricted to 82 runs thanks to the skillful bowling of Jermaine Cole who took 3 wickets for 14 runs, Mario Grant 2 for 6 runs and Tyrone Whyte 2 for 19 runs. UWI in their response posted 125 runs for the loss of 4 wickets with Desmond Jones charging to an easy 72 runs not out.

This is the first time a UWI cricket team is entering the competition under the tutelage of former Jamaican and West Indian Cricketer Robert Samuels and to have won the Junior Cup Championship which is Jamaica's second division competition is quite an achievement. Paul "Skippie" Palmer expressed his delight in coming away the victor. "Our expectations were high, we expected that we would come out victorious by just carry out instructions given by our coach and to just work hard and believe in each and everyone's abilities."

This championship brings to an end the competition season for the UWI Cricket Pelicans who are quite ecstatic to have brought the curtain down on a winning note.
