MODULE NO. 3
MAPPING PAST HAZARDS, PREDICTING FUTURE HAZARDS:

LAB. NO. 11 PROJECT WORK:
· Preparation of geologic-environmental profile including natural hazards of a small area in the Port Royal Mountains, St.Andrew. Introduction to the engineering properties of rocks and soils.

· A brief report on the regional geologic constraints, especially landslides and flooding, on the site selected for housing development and surrounding areas including recommendations. This report must be based on your own data.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM:
The principal aim of this exercise is to introduce geologic constraints, especially landslides and flooding, on landuse and preparation of a project report with limited field checks.
Selection of the project area is guided by a newspaper report "Deal signed for Hope Pastures Housing Development" in the Daily Observer, Wednesday, October 6, 1999, page 3 (copy enclosed).
The time constraints in data collection and interpretation, scale of mapping and, availability of background information are the main limitations in the preparation of the project report.
Your report is regarded as a desk study with a regional scope rather than a site-specific report.

DURATION: 8 hours

IMPORTANT NOTES:

PROJECT WORK (INCLUDING LIMITED FIELD CHECKS) MUST BE COMPLETED DURING THE ALLOTTED TIME.
THIS REPORT MUST NOT EXCEED 10 TYPED PAGES (FONT SIZE 12 NORMAL, AND DOUBLE SPACED) EXCLUDING ILLUSTRATIONS.
ORAL PRESENTATION: A SHORT ORAL PRESENTATION ON THE PROJECT IS TO BE MADE.

MATERIAL SUPPLIED:
1:10,000 topographic map extract from Sheet KINGSTON 2, Edition 3-D.O.S. 1972.
Copies of vertical aerial photographs ID No. S 9535-36-37 Jacks Hill; Date: 4 – 2 – 89, Scale: 1: 10,000.
These photographs cover the area for the project work shown on 1:10,000 topographic base map. Kingston Geologic Sheet No. 25.
