SUMMER 2003GEOHAZARDS COURSE AT UWI, MONA - page 118

Prepared and compiled by Rafi Ahmad, Unit for Disaster Studies,
Department of Geography and Geology,
University of the West Indies, Mona, Kingston 7, Jamaica

PROCEDURE:

You are asked to:
Read the newspaper report and locate the area on the topographic- and geological maps, and aerial photos.
Consult Kingston Geologic Sheet # 25 and KMA Landslide Susceptibility Maps in Geology Museum to get an idea of the geology, faults and geohazards.
Check Earthquake Unit for seismic activity in this area.
Identify the area of the proposed development on the 1:10,000 topographic map extract from Sheet KINGSTON 2, Edition 3-D.O.S. 1972.
(Demarcate the area lightly with a soft lead pencil).
Using 10,000 sheet, study the geomorphology of the area bounded to the East by the Hope River; North by the Sky Line Drive, and West by the Widcombe- Quarry- Mountain Spring Road connecting with the Skyline Drive.
Within this area trace contour lines at 100 ft. interval in light purple, drainage lines in light blue, ridges in light brown.
If you suspect presence of alluvial fans, shade these very lightly in green.
Are there any areas where flooding is likely?
Has the area been deforested?
If you suspect any landslides, trace the scarp and mark the movement direction in light gray, and show landslide deposits in fine stipple pattern in light gray.
On the 10,000 sheet, show all geomorphic features in a legend format and insert North and the graphic scale.
Draw a topographic profile on the map- scale along a NNE- SSW line between Pond and Sky Line Drive.
Briefly describe the geomorphology of the area, especially the slope angles. Comment on the landuse.
For the purposes of this project, comment on the appropriate map scale which must be used in the study and why.
Prepare a photogeologic map of the area utilizing the information as above.
Pay a brief field visit (reconnaissance) to check your maps.
Revise your maps and interpretations and write a brief report.
You must hand in your report and give a 5-minute oral presentation on the major recommendations on the site with your reasons.
