1 B. 2 Lab. No. 1: TOPOGRAPHIC MAP INTERPRETATION BASICS

A. PROCEED TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS AND COMPLETE THE EXERCISE IF YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE USE OF TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS.
FIRST TIME USERS SHOULD READ SECTION B AND THEN COMPLETE THE EXERCISE. HELP IS AVAILABLE.
You are asked to:

a. Read the report.

b. Identify the area of the proposed development on the 1:10,000 topographic map extract from Sheet KINGSTON 2, Edition 3-D.O.S. 1972. (Demarcate the area lightly with a soft lead pencil).

c. Repeat the above on the 1: 50,000 Kingston Sheet 18, 1984.

d. Using 10,000 sheet, study the geomorphology of the area bounded to the East by the Hope River; North by the Sky Line Drive, and West by the Widcombe- Quarry- Mountain Spring Road connecting with the Skyline Drive.

e. Within this area trace contour lines at 100 ft. interval in light purple, drainage lines in light blue, ridges in light brown.

f. If you suspect presence of alluvial fans, shade these very lightly in green.

g. If you suspect any landslides, trace the scarp and mark the movement direction in light grey, and show landslide deposits in fine stipple pattern in light gray.

h. On the 10,000 sheet, show e. and f. in a legend format and insert North and the graphic scale

i. Draw a topographic profile on the map- scale along a NNE- SSW line between Pond and Sky Line Drive.

j. Briefly describe the geomorphology of the area, especially the slope angles.
