4. PROCEDURE

A. Study the marginal information on the photographs and record the following:
Index to photographs
Flying height
Camera focal length
Determine the photo scale
Explain your procedure. Can you determine the photoscale by comparing the photos with the topographic map?

B. Study the photographs with the help of a mirror stereoscope (see analysis method in section 3). Prepare a photo-geologic-geomorphic map of the area. The various stages in map preparation are as follows. Like all maps, your map must have a title, scale, north direction, names of major cultural features and a legend. A rough legend is prepared in the first instance and modified as the work progresses.
i) Prepare a detailed drainage map of the area using photo # 24; remember tracing is to be done on the film using a soft lead fine tip pencil.
THIS IS THE BASE MAP.

ii) Identify major landforms, e.g., hills, ridges, alluvial fans, landslides, valleys, flood plains, coastal features etc.

iii) Identify and mark major rock types and surficial deposits; record the corresponding photo characters for these on the chart.
Can you identify bedding? Are bedding strike trends apparent on the photos? Determine the dip direction and estimate the amount of dip and mark it on the photos.

iv) Identify major structural features and mark them on the drainage map, e.g., faults and folds. Note the criteria for distinguishing these features.

v) Determine the stratigraphy.

vi) List major hazards in the area.

C. Examine the land-use in the area in relation to geologic and geomorphic features.
Describe human settlements and critical facilities in the area in relation to their geomorphic setting and natural hazards.
Are there any mining and industrial activities in the area? How do these affect the human settlements?
