Serum Magnesium and High-sensitive C-reactive Proteins in Hypertensive, Obese Female School Learners

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.292
Pages:
32-7
Synopsis:
This study highlights the increased cardiovascular risks in overweight/obese female school learners in an understudied region of South Africa. There were higher proportions of pre-hypertension, hypertension, and low-grade inflammation in overweight/obese participants in comparison with their lean participants.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To examine the relationship of serum magnesium and high-sensitive C-reactive proteins (hsCRPs) with overweight/obesity, and its association with hypertension in lean versus overweight/obese (O/O), female, adolescent school learners living in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Comparative Evaluation of Dyslipaedemia in Obese and Diabetic Patients in Rural and Urban Areas in Lahore, Pakistan

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.327
Synopsis:
The present study indicated that combined obesity and diabetes were the major cause of dyslipaedemia and coronary artery disease (CAD) followed by obesity and diabetes. Moreover, the risk of dyslipaedemia and CAD in the urban population, was not significantly different from the rural population.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Obesity and diabetes mellitus are interconnected conditions that share a number of pathophysiological mechanisms such as dyslipidemia leading to cardiovascular complications. The present study was conducted to determine the individual and combined effect of diabetes mellitus and obesity on dyslipidemia and ultimately on silent coronary artery disease (CAD).

Predictive Utility of Anthropometric Based Cut-offs in Assessing Excess Adiposity among Preschool Children in a Multiethnic Population

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.485
Pages:
114-20
Synopsis:
We evaluated the diagnostic performance of various recommended anthropometric-based cut-offs in identifying excess adiposity in a multi-ethnic, pre-school population. Our results suggested that diagnostic performance was associated with gender and the cut-offs used, but was not associated with ethnicity.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Screening for childhood obesity is a necessary step in developing appropriate and effective interventions. We evaluated the diagnostic performance of various recommended international anthropometric cut-offs based on body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), triceps skinfold (TSF), and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) in predicting excess adiposity (body fat ≥ 25%) in a random sample of Trinidadian preschoolers.

Which Factors are Predictive for Presence of Insulin Resistance in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.463
Pages:
15-20
Synopsis:
We investigated obesity and insulin resistance and associated factors in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Cumulative steroid dose, the presence of obesity and disease activity were the best predictors for insulin resistance. Disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs may help to reduce insulin resistance.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate obesity and insulin resistance and associated factors in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
