Thesis Abstract
Tide-dominated sedimentary successions occur within the Guys Hill Formation (Bocene), Yellow Limestone Group of central Jamaica and the Morne l'Enfer Formation (Pliocene) of southern Trinidad . In Trinidad such sands represent important reservoir rocks for hydrocarbons, and the succession in Jamaica has recently attracted interest from petroleum companies. The provenance of these sands is important in developing depositional models for these basins.
The proposed M.Phil. project will examine this sedimentary successions in the Guys Hill and Central Inlier and the Mome l'Enfer Formation in Trinidad to understand the lateral and vertical succession of facies (sequence stratigraphy and facies analysis), the changing environments represented (Facies analysis), and the source of the sandstones (analysis of heavy mineral and framework grains).
The project will provide training in: detailed geological mapping, logging sedimentary successions, sedimentary facies analysis of elastic successions, point-counting of thin sections, heavy mineral analysis, IT analysis in geology.
