The Department of Basic Medical Sciences
consist of four disciplines: Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and
Physiology. The merging of the four disciplines took place in 1997/98,
with the aim of creating a department that would be more economically
viable, as the merger would result in the pooling resources, both
human and financial. This relatively young department has done fairly
well since the merger, producing sixteen (16) MPhiL students and eleven
(11) PhD students. Total publications (referred) over the six year
period is approximately seventy seven (77). Outstanding researchers
who have retired include Prof E A Kean (The mode of action of hypoglycin),
Prof H Coore (Enzymology), and Prof M West (Anti-glaucoma drugs)
.
Outstanding current researchers include Prof E Y Morrison (Diabetes
mellitus), Prof R Young (Human and Comparative Physiology), Prof
H Reid (Clinical Haemorheology) and Prof H Asemota (Storage improvement
of tropical tuber crops-yams).
