Since the 1990’s much of our
research has been directed towards molecular biology, microbiology
and biotechnology and more so in the areas of agriculture and the
environment. Similarly, new undergraduate programs were developed
in the areas of microbiology and molecular biology and new facilities
for both undergraduate and graduate training established.
Research programs in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology combines
the resources of the Departments of Basic Medical Sciences
and the Biotechnology Centre. The Biochemistry Section is
unique in that it spans both the Faculty of Medical Sciences
and Pure and Applied Sciences and therefore therefore develop
research and teaching in both disciplines.
Research Facilities
Research and Teaching Facilities include: Thermal cycler for PCR,
plant growth chambers, environmental incubator shaker incubators,
incubators, centrifuges, DNA sequencing equipment, DNA and protein
electrophoresis systems, UV gel documentation system, laminar flow
hoods, -80°C freezers, freeze drier, HPLC, GC, liquid scintillation
counter, plate reader, computer servers and network, personal computers.
There are two main buildings for Biochemistry, Molecular biology
and Microbiology. These buildings house three undergraduate laboratories,
a computer laboratory, equipment room, research laboratories and
offices.
