UWI SURGEON AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS ACS FELLOWSHIP

Senior lecturer in the Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at The University of the West Indies,(UWI) Mona and consultant general surgeon at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) Dr. Joseph Plummer, has been selected as one of twelve International Guest Scholars for 2016 by the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons(ACS).

UWI Professor Verene Shepherd elected for UN Committee Against Racial Discrimination

The UWI congratulates Director of the Institute for Gender & Development Studies and Professor of Social History at the Mona Campus, Professor Verene Shepherd on her appointment to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD).
 

Professor Verene Shepherd to Address General Assembly on Elimination of Racial Discrimination

University Director of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies, Professor Verene Shepherd, has been invited to be a keynote speaker at a commemorative plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to be held in New York on Friday, March 20, 2015.
 
The meeting will focus on the status of racial discrimination worldwide, and the theme for this year’s event is “Learning from historical tragedies to combat racial discrimination today”. This year’s commemoration also coincides with the commencement of the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015 - 2024).
 

French National Honour for Two UWI Academics

The Government of France has conferred the designation Knight of the National Order of Merit (Chevalier de L’Ordre National du Merite) on two members of staff of The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. They are Head of the Department of Modern Languages, Dr. Paulette Ramsay, and Senior Lecturer and former head of the Department of Government,   Dr.  Jessica Byron-Reid.
 
The award, which was created in 1963 by President Charles de Gaulle, recognizes distinguished service and exceptional contributions to France by French or non-French individuals who have given significant service in the military, or in the public or private sector.
 

The UWI Presents 5 Awards to Outstanding Academic and Administrative Staff

The University of the West Indies recognised an entire department as well as four faculty members at its Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence Ceremony on October 27, 2014.
 

Sir Hilary Beckles to serve as next Vice-Chancellor of The UWI

An Extraordinary Meeting of University Council convened pursuant to Statue 22 paragraph 5 presided over by the Chancellor of the University, this afternoon (September 5) accepted the report from the Search Committee established to identify a new Vice-Chancellor and agreed to appoint Sir Hilary Beckles as the next Vice-Chancellor of the University with effect from May 1, 2015. 

 

National Honours for four UWI Mona academics

Four members of The UWI, Mona community have been named among recipients of National Honours and Awards, with effect from Independence Day, August 6, 2014. The awards will be presented at the annual National Honours and Awards Ceremony to be held at King’s House later this year.
 
The Order of Jamaica (OJ), the country’s  fifth highest honour will be conferred on Director of the Hugh Wynter Fertility Management Unit, Professor Joseph Frederick, for distinguished service to the Faculty of Medical Sciences, The University of the West Indies, and the University Hospital of the West Indies, in particular for research conducted in assisted reproduction.
 

2014 Vice Chancellor's Awards for Excellence to be presented October 27

Three members of staff at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus have been named as recipients of the 2014 Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. They are Professor Marvin Reid, Director of the Tropical Metabolism Research Unit, and Professor Simon Mitchell, Department of Geography and Geology, who will both be recognized for Outstanding Research Accomplishments; and Professor Hopeton Dunn, Director of the Caribbean Institute of Media & Communications (CARIMAC), whose award is for contributions to public service. 
 

Dr Parris Lyew-Ayee Returns to Jamaica from Eisenhower Fellowship

Dr Parris Lyew-Ayee - Senior Lecturer and Director of the Mona GeoInformatics Institute of the University of the West Indies - has returned to Jamaica following a seven-week program in the United States to investigate ways to improve data-driven decision-making in Jamaica.
 
Dr Lyew-Ayee was sponsored by the prestigious Eisenhower Fellowships program, chaired by General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret).
 

Mervyn Morris is Poet Laureate of Jamaica

Distinguished academic and writer/poet Professor Emeritus the Hon. Mervyn Morris,  has been selected for the prestigious position of Poet Laureate of Jamaica and  will receive the official Badge of Office, thereby formalising his appointment  from Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, at an investiture ceremony scheduled for King’s House today, Wednesday, May 21, 2014.
