NEWS ADVISORY: Fraudulent Cheques in Circulation

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus wishes to advise the public that unscrupulous persons have presented fraudulent cheques purporting to be from The University of the West Indies, Western Jamaica Campus Imprest Account and drawn on the Bank of Nova Scotia, Montego Bay branch.
 

Statement from the Vice-Chancellor | Kamau's Abeng

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) mourns the passing of Barbadian poet and academic, Kamau Brathwaite.The following statement is issued by the Vice-Chancellor of The UWI, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles.

We came to know and love Kamau Brathwaite as the keeper of the ‘abeng’, the African inspired use of the conch shell to spread manifesto messages among mountain maroons and their fellow forest freedom fighters.

The ‘abeng man’ grew a barberless beard, wore a roster of Rasta tams, sliding across our campuses, feet unchained in leathery slippers, and could never speak at a table without this thumb throbbing to the inner sound...the sound...the sound!

The UWI and Brock University explore proposal for a Canada-Caribbean Studies Institute

A signing event which took place on Friday April 5, 2019 between The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and Brock University in Canada signals the opening of discussions for the establishment of an Institute for Canada-Caribbean Studies.  

The occasion, hosted at the Brock campus in the Niagara region, Ontario also marked the renewal of two existing MOUs, which serve to promote international and intercultural understanding, academic linkages and enrich the cultural understanding of both universities. They will also will continue to provide mobility opportunities for faculty, staff and students as well as joint research activities between the two institutions.

UWI Strengthening Canada-Caribbean Relations

Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Professor Sir Hilary Beckles is pleased to announce that the proposal for the establishment of the Canada-Caribbean Institute (CCI) was approved at a meeting of the University Finance and General Purposes Committee UFGPC) on October 30, 2019.

The new Institute, which is a collaboration with Brock University in Canada, will provide multi-disciplinary research and teaching to deepen and improve the relations between Canada and the Caribbean, and serve to examine issues affecting the Caribbean diaspora communities in Canada. 

The UWI and Brock University’s Canada-Caribbean Institute to host Inaugural Symposium

Recently, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and Brock University (BU) established the Canada-Caribbean Institute, devoted to the study of Canada-Caribbean relations. The Institute will host its inaugural event, a three-day Canada-Caribbean Research Symposium, on February 17-19 in Jamaica at The UWI’s Regional Headquarters.

Caribbean economic growth and trade with Canada, health and the environment, social issues and education, and Caribbean culture and the diaspora are tabled for discussion. The objective of the Symposium is to bring together researchers and scholars across disciplines from universities in Canada and the Caribbean as well as policy makers to address related issues to identify ways to consolidate and revitalise their ongoing relationship.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Mona Campus thanked Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles for his 40 years of unbroken service to the regional University at a long service awards ceremony on Thursday, January 30, 2020. The ceremony was held at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge & Conference Centre.

Saint Lucian Prime Minister and Trini-born actress among six to be honoured at New York fundraising gala for The UWI

Saint Lucian Prime Minister, the Honourable Allen Chastanet and Trinidad and Tobago-born actress, Lorraine Toussaint will be among six persons honoured at the upcoming annual Legacy Awards Gala hosted by the American Foundation for The University of the West Indies (AFUWI) on February 19. The Gala, to be held at the Pierre Hotel in New York City, is now in its 23rd year.
