Five Bursaries to be provided for students with disabilities

Effective September 2014, The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona will be providing five bursaries valued at J$50,000 each, for students with disabilities.
 
This was announced by Mona Principal, Professor Archibald McDonald, at the opening ceremony of the inaugural Regional Disability Studies Conference hosted by the Centre for Disability Studies, Mona.
 
The scholarships will be handled through the Centre, and will be granted to five students with disabilities who have maintained a ‘B’ average in their studies. Professor McDonald said that the bursary was yet another major University initiative geared at providing friendly and accommodating educational services to all students with disabilities.
 

Blood Drive, March 25 & 26

The University of the West Indies in partnership with the National Blood Transfusion Service will be hosting the first blood collection drive on March 25 & 26, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall (Mona Campus).Who can donate:

  • People aged 17 – 60 years
  • Must have eaten a meal within the past 3 hours
  • Must not have had a piercing or tattoo for a year
  • Have a body weight of at least 110 lbs

Come out in your numbers. Let us do our part in keeping the supply of blood adequate and safe.

Community leaders to attend classes at UWI Mona

Ten leaders from five communities in Kingston, St Mary and St Thomas have confirmed their attendance on the next two Tuesdays (March 18 & 25), at the Social Planning and Project Development course offered in the Department of Sociology, Psychology & Social Work.  This activity coincides with the global observance of World Social Work Day (WSD) on Tuesday March 18, when schools of social work organise events to highlight the contribution of social work to personal and collective problem-solving and development.
 

Fifteen Actor Boy Award nominations for the University Players

The University Players, the resident theatre company at the Philip Sherlock Centre, UWI, Mona, received a total of fifteen nominations in the International Theatre Institute (Jamaica Chapter’s) Actor Boy Awards for 2013.
 
The awards are presented annually to outstanding Jamaican theatre productions. This year’s nominations are for two productions staged by the University Players in 2013, namely, Samuel Hilary’s vintage Jamaican classic play ‘Departure in the Dark’ and Aston Cooke’s lively Jamaican musical ‘Jonkanoo Jamboree’.
 

Professor Benkeblia advances talks on Sweet Potato research with China

University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Professor Noureddine Benkeblia has advanced talks on research, biotechnology and production of potato and sweetpotato during a recent visit to the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the Institute of Vegetables and Flowers in China, January 7-15. During the visit, Professor Benkeblia also discussed the development of new projects between CAAS and UWI.

Since its inception in 1945, gender equality has been of paramount importance to the United Nations. Fifty years after its establishment, the 1995 Human Development Report - which marked the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing - concluded that human development is endangered unless it is engendered. The Millennium Development Goals further reiterated that gender equality is a human right.
 

UWI's new Marine Lab to reverse destruction of Portland reefs

The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona in collaboration with TBA21–Academy and its Founder Francesca von Habsburg are very proud to launch the Alligator Head Marine Lab.
 
This is a new platform created with the aim to reverse the destructive tendencies that have plagued the coast of Portland, so as to revitalise the reefs and protect the underwater sea life.
 

Earl and Countess of Wessex visit Mona Campus March 4

His Royal Highness The Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex will be visiting Jamaica from March 2 -5 for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Ceremony.
 
The Earl will be visiting The UWI, Mona Campus on Tuesday, March 4, 2014. He will visit the UWI Mona Bowl for Sporting Excellence and also open the UWI Sports Medicine Clinic at the Faculty of Medical Sciences’ Teaching & Research Complex.

Over the past week there have been many tributes to the Jamaican born thinker Stuart Hall. We at the Centre  for Caribbean Thought  remember the 2004 conference , “  Culture , Politics , Race and Diaspora: The Thought of Stuart Hall,” where  with  mesmerizing eloquence Hall  addressed  ideas about  thinking, activism, the Caribbean  Diaspora , politics and  the  complex relationships between culture , race, class and power.
 

Application deadline for UWI Discover series - Feb 28th

Applications are now open for The UWI's DISCOVER Series 2014. The UWI’s DISCOVER series takes you on an exciting journey through Brazil, Russia, India and China. The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus, presents study tours that provide immersion in the culture, history, politics, architecture and people of promising economies and rich cultures, led by expert academic tour guides.

The registration deadline for the India and Brazil tours of The UWI’s Discover Series  is this Friday - February 28th 2014
