Patsy Lewis promoted to rank of Professor

The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Patsy Lewis, Senior Fellow in the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) to the rank of Professor.
 
Patsy Lewis holds the Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications, with first class honours, and the Diploma in Public Administration from The University of the West Indies, Mona as well as the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in International Relations and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in History from Trinity College, Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.
 

Former US Diplomat to lecture on Obama foreign policy and Diplomacy

Retired United States Diplomat, Earle Scarlett – a Jamaican-born, US Department of State career officer – will deliver two public lectures on foreign policy and diplomacy on January 28 and 30 on the invitation of the Sir Arthur Institute for Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) of the University of the West Indies.
 
Mr. Scarlett will lecture on United States President Barrack Obama’s Foreign policy agenda – Opportunities and Constraints on January 28, and on A Diplomat’s Quiver – Handling the Unpredictable, on January 30th. Both lectures will take place at the Council Room of the University of the West Indies Regional Headquarters at 6:30 p.m., both days.
 

UWI-CHART trains health care workers to support Caribbean People Living With HIV (PLHIV)

The Regional Coordinating Unit of the Caribbean HIV/AIDS Regional Training network (UWI-CHART)will host a regional Training of Trainers Workshop for persons who will provide training to Health Care Workers Providing Psychosocial Support for People Living with HIV (PLHIV).

The training will take place at the Coco Palm Resort in St. Lucia on February 11 to 14, 2014. A total of twenty-nine participants representing, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, St. Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, The Bahamas, Suriname and Dominica are expected to participate in the workshop.

UWI Mona student places 2nd in US Oratorical contest

UWI Mona student, Cleopatra Parkins - a member of the Department of Government's High Achiever Society - has placed second in an oratorical contest at the Black Student Leadership Conference at the Texas A and M University, College Station Texas held from January 16-19, 2014.
 

UNICEF And UWI’s Institute Of International Relations Sign MOU on Children’s Issues

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad & Tobago: The Institute of International Relations (IIR) of The University of the West Indies and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a Hub for the creation and facilitation of the Caribbean Child Rights Observatory Network (CCRON).
 

UWI Mona gives creditable showing at int'l chess tournament

The University of the West Indies Mona campus has been recognized as second best international team at the Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championships with a score of 2.5 points.
 
The tournament which took place recently in Texas, was in its 60th edition and featured 42 College and University chess teams from North America and the Caribbean.
 
UWI Mona's score came from victories over Yale University and Arizona State University, in addition to a hard fought draw with Washington University. The trip was made possible by the Office of the Principal.

TMRI receives grant funding to support brain development of children

An online early cognitive stimulation programme innovated by the University of the West Indies Mona campus is one of 14 projects awarded grant funding by Grand Challenges Canada, funded by the Government of Canada.
 
Grand Challenges gave a total of $10.1 million to the 14 bold, creative projects which are all aimed at improving the early brain development of children in low-resource countries.Projects in Jamaica, Colombia, Bangladesh and Indonesia are scale-up award nominees (board-approved grants up to CDN $2 million, pending successful contract negotiations).

UWI students compete in international chess tournament

National Master Stuart James led the University of the West Indies Mona to compete at the Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championships in Texas from December 27-30.
 
The event, which is in its 60th edition, is hosted by Texas Tech University and will host several College and University teams from North America and the Caribbean, including many Grand and International Masters.
 
James has been arguably one of the most successful local players in recent times, having won the National Junior Championship and Carifta Championship in 2012, and the 2013 President's Invitational.
 
Other team members include the experienced and active Miguel Asher, Laurence Davey and Andrew Anglin.

UWI 5K gives $10 million to UWI student scholarships

Student Development Gets $10 Million Boost from CB Group UWI 5K Run/WalkKingston, Jamaica; UWI student development is set to gain an immense push following the second successful staging of the CB Group UWI 5K Run Walk, held on Sunday November 17. CB Group COO Mathew Lyn presented the cheque valued at $10 Million on Thursday, December 19 to Professor Ishenkumba Kahwa, Deputy Principal, Mona Campus.
 
The profits will go toward scholarships for students who demonstrate outstanding ability in sports and academics. The event has now raised $28 Million in two years following the record breaking $18 Million raised from the inaugural staging in 2012.
