Advisory to Staff and Students - Update 2

Classes will remain suspended at the UWI Mona Campus for today, Thursday September 30, 2010. However, all members of staff are being asked to report for duty as soon as possible.

All libraries will be open for students who wish to use the facilities.

Members of the university community are urged not to expose themselves to unnecessary risk and to listen to the weather bulletins being issued by the Met. Office. Further advisories will be issued by the Campus as required.

Persons needing further information should contact the Safety & Emergency Management at cellular numbers 817-3339 or 282-3287. For information about the UWI Mona Western Jamaica Campus (WJC), persons should contact the WJC Main Administrative Office at telephone number 940-4349.

Advisory to Staff and Students

Owing to the inclement weather, and on the recommendation of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), all classes at the Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies will be suspended for today, Wednesday, September 29, 2010.  Students who are already on the campus and need to access library facilities may use the Medical and Science Libraries, however the Main Library will remain closed until further notice.

Given the prevailing conditions. members of the university community are urged not to expose themselves to unnecessary risk and to listen to the weather bulletins being issued by the Met Office. Further advisories will be issued by the Campus as required.

President of FIFA Visits Mona Campus

President of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), Joseph S. Blatter will visit the University of the West Indies, Mona for the inauguration of the Jamaica Football Federation Technical Centre (Goal Project I) and Ground Breaking Ceremony for Goal Project II. The Ceremony takes place on Monday, September 27, 2010 at 10 am at the UWI Mona Bowl Centre for Sporting Excellence. This will be followed by a Press Conference. 

Goal Project I and II entails additional development of the football training facilities and the construction of an extra football field as well as the erection of administrative offices as part of the Football Academy Centre. 

UWI welcomes Bermuda as a Member Country

Bermuda is now the 16th country to officially join The University of the West Indies family. Bermuda’s status as an associate contributing country was approved by University Council in April 2010 and officially promulgated  with the ceremonial signing of the new Statute defining the  ‘Associate Contributing Country’ status for Bermuda by Vice Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, Professor E. Nigel Harris and Bermudan Premier Dr. the Honorable Ewart Brown. The ceremony took place on August 25, 2010 at the Premier’s official residence, Camden House, in Bermuda.

UWI Establishes The Rex Nettleford Foundation

The Rex Nettleford Foundation which was established on May 28, 2010, will be launched on Friday, September 17, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre.

The Foundation is in memory of Professor The Hon Rex Nettleford, a well-known Caribbean scholar, trade union educator, social and cultural historian and political analyst.  He was also the co-founder, artistic director and principal choreographer of the internationally acclaimed National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica and was widely regarded throughout the Caribbean and the Diaspora as a leading authority on development and cultural dynamics.

Dr. Eris Dawn Schoburgh Awarded Commonwealth Fellowship

Dr Eris D. Schoburgh, lecturer in public policy and public sector management in the Department of Government, University of the West Indies, Mona and coordinator of the Public Sector Management Unit has been awarded a Commonwealth Fellowship for 2010/11 tenable at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom (UK).

Dr. Schoburgh’s research interests are in public policy and public sector management with emphasis  on comparative local governance/local government policy. She is currently engaged in studying the institutional and organizational capacity of Caribbean local governments, facilitated by a Mona Research Fellowship.

Outreach Programmes at Confucius Institute at UWI, Mona

The official opening of the Confucius Institute at the UWI, Mona took place recently. The major objective of the Confucius Institute at the University of the West Indies, Mona, is to promote the learning of Chinese Language and culture, function as a bridge between the Jamaica and Chinese people, and be a major resource centre for those wishing to learn about China.  The Institute seeks an active involvement with the Jamaican community, through several outreach programmes.

Kingsley ‘Ragashanti’ Stewart Resigns from NewsTalk 93FM

The University of the West Indies, Mona, wishes to advise that Kingsley ‘Ragashanti’ Stewart this morning, September 1, tendered his resignation with immediate effect from the programme ‘Ragashanti Live’ broadcast on NewsTalk 93FM.

The Principal of the Mona Campus and Chairman of Universal Media Company Ltd, operators of NewsTalk 93 FM, Professor Gordon Shirley received an email from  ‘Ragashanti ‘ in which he stated that effective Wednesday September 1, “the programme ‘Ragashanti Live’ would no longer broadcast from Newstalk 93 FM effective Wednesday September 1, 2010. “

Dale Webber Promoted To Rank Of Professor


The University of the West Indies, Mona is pleased to announce the promotion of Senior Lecturer in the Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, Dr. Dale Webber, to the rank of Professor.

Dr. Webber, who is also Director of the Centre for Marine Sciences and Associate Dean, Graduate Matters in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, holds the Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Botany and Zoology and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Marine Botany from the University of the West Indies, Mona.  His academic specialization is in the field of Coastal Ecology and Management.

Local and International Scholars Receive Graduate Research Training at UWI, Mona

South-South Exchange Programme for Research on the History of Development (SEPHIS) in collaboration with the University of the West Indies, Mona has organized Graduate Research Training Workshops for students in the Humanities from August 23 – 25, 2010 at UWI, Mona. The workshops are designed to provide guidance and to train graduate students and junior academics in Planning Your Research, Proposal Writing, Grant Application Writing and Writing for Publication. Forty participants from seven countries namely: Nigeria, Haiti, Jamaica, Brazil, Trinidad, St.
