Speak Your Mind Surveys

As part of ongoing efforts to improve services to students at The University of the West Indies, the Office of Planning and Institutional Research recently conducted two student experience surveys targeting first degree graduates from the Class of 2008 and first degree registrants in their 1st, 2nd and final year of study at Mona. Entitled “Speak Your Mind”, the surveys solicited the views of students on a range of issues including academic programming, administrative services and support resources.

The results of the surveys will assist administrators in evaluating the programmes and services offered at UWI and determining where interventions are needed to ensure the satisfaction and marketability of UWI graduates.

London Police Commissioner For 5 –Day Visit To Jamaica

Commissioner of the London Metropolitan Police, Sir Paul Stephenson, arrives in Jamaica on Friday, April 30, 2010 for a five day visit to the island. The visit is the first in a series of planned visits of prominent international crime management experts with knowledge of contemporary trends in policing, being organised by The University of the West Indies, Mona, in collaboration with the Police Services Commission.   The visits are intended to facilitate an interaction between these experts and key persons associated with the transformation of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) allowing for an exchange of perspectives, ideas and recommendations on specific elements of the transformation process.

Claremont Kirton Promoted to Professor

The University of the West Indies, Mona is pleased to announce the promotion of Claremont Kirton, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Mona to the position of Professor, with effect from February 3, 2010.

Claremont Kirton holds the Bachelor of Sciences and Master of Sciences degrees in Economics from The University of the West Indies, Mona. He joined the staff of The University of the West Indies as a Lecturer in the Department of Economics in 1977. He has served as Visiting Lecturer/Scholar at universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Curacao, Suriname, Cuba and Guyana. He is an accomplished public intellectual and development economist with a focus on the Caribbean region.

Bold Action Required To Deal With Budget Cuts

The University of the West Indies, Mona will have to be bold in the actions which it takes to deal with the recent budgetary cuts in order to ensure that it emerges a stronger and more competitive institution, capable of existing in a global environment with “unassailable areas of excellence and competence.” This was the view expressed by Mona Principal, Professor Gordon Shirley, as he addressed members of staff on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at the third in a series of town hall meetings aimed at briefing them on the financial state of the Campus and to provide an update on the progress being made to cope with the difficult economic environment. 

Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad Team Selected

The University of the West Indies, in collaboration with Sterling Asset Management, has completed the Final Round of the 2010 Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad.  A total of 49 students sat the Final Round Examination, which was held on April 17, 2010.  These students came from 21 high schools throughout Jamaica.  After assessing the examination scripts, the Department of Mathematics has selected five students for the 2010 Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad Team. They are: Aaron Johnson, Campion College; Nicholas McFarlane, Ardenne High School; Daniel Chin, Glenmuir High School ; Sanjae King, (First Alternate) Glenmuir High School  and Jhanelle Thomas, (Second Alternate) Campion College

Security Initiatives Achieve Success

As part of the ongoing strategy to reduce criminal activities on The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona Campus, the Police have increased covert activities to deal with a spike in car break–ins.

During March-April 2010, there were ten (10) arrests. The Police made two (2) significant break-throughs in this regard: one person was held while attempting to break into a car on campus and has confessed to several counts of car break-ins which coincided with statements from complainants.

In St Ann, a car stolen from the Mona Campus was recovered by the Police. The driver is now in custody at the Half Way Tree Lock-up and is cooperating with the Police Investigators.

Edward Ghartey Promoted To Professor

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Edward Ghartey, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Mona Campus to the rank of Professor.

 Professor Ghartey holds the Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Ghana (1979) the Master of Arts degree from Acadia University Canada (1983) and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from Dalhousie University Canada (1987). 

Edward Ghartey joined the staff of the UWI, Mona in 1993 as a Lecturer and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1998. Prior to joining the staff, he was an Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Howard University, USA (1988-1993).

UWI and WRA Sign MOU To Improve Knowledge Of Water Resources

The University of the West Indies, Mona and the Water Resources Authority (WRA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to improve knowledge of water resources in the island, and enhance staff and institutional capacity in the water and education sectors. This will be done through research and development in water resources planning, management, and development.

Wayne McLaughlin Promoted to Professor

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Wayne McLaughlin, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences to the rank of Professor in Molecular Biology, with effect from February 3, 2010.

Dr. McLaughlin holds the Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Biology from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biochemistry from The University of the West Indies, Mona. He also has post-graduate training and experience in Forensic DNA analysis and the Interpretation of DNA mixtures and statistical analysis, as well as project implementation and management.

Minerva Thame Promoted To The Rank Of Professor

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Minerva Thame, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health, Faculty of Medical Sciences at Mona to the rank of Professor.

Professor Thame, a past student of Meadowbrook High School holds the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery Degree (1985), Doctor of Medicine Degree in Paediatrics (1991), as well as the Doctor of Philosophy in Community Health (1999) from the University of the West Indies. She also holds a Diploma in Child Health (1988) from the University of the West Indies.
