UWI Mona Lecturer appointed Chair of IACHR Board

UWI Mona Senior lecturer in the Faculty of Law, Tracy Robinson has been elected Chair of the Board of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
 
The board of officers elected on March 20 is composed of Tracy Robinson (Jamaica), Chair; Rose Marie Antoine (Saint Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago), First Vice-Chair; and Felipe González (Chile), Second Vice-Chair. The election was held, in accordance with the IACHR rules of procedure, at the beginning of the Commission’s 150th regular Period of Sessions. The other members of the IACHR are José de Jesús Orozco Henríquez, Rosa María Ortiz, Paulo Vannuchi and James Cavallaro. The Executive Secretary is Emilio Alvarez Icaza (Mexico).
 

UWI Vice Chancellor pays tribute to the late Norman Girvan

The Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, Professor E. Nigel Harris and the entire University community are deeply saddened by the death of Professor Emeritus Norman Girvan C.D. on Wednesday, April 9, 2014.  Our Region has lost one of its great sons who has made a significant contribution to regional development theory and policy.  As a brilliant scholar, a dear friend and colleague, a committed regionalist, and a caring and dedicated teacher to many generations of students, Norman  played an influential role in Caribbean development, transcending language and geographical borders.
 

Second Conference on Higher Education starts May 8

The UNESCO Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNESCO/IESALC) and The University of the West Indies (The UWI) will convene the Second Conference on Higher Education in the Caribbean (II CCHE), May 8 and 9, 2014 at the Regional Headquarters of The UWI in Kingston, Jamaica.
 

MSBM Students Get Third Win in OFCVC Business Plan Competition

Mona School of Business & Management (MSBM) MBA students Alicia Brown and Ana-Kay Green continued the University of the West Indies’ (UWI) growing tradition of winning the Opportunity Funding Corporation  Venture Challenge (OFVC) competition which is held annually in Atlanta Georgia. The duo, which competed in the Thurgood Marshall Fund-sponsored event from Thursday April 10- Saturday April 13 also won awards for both Best Presentation, and Best Business Plan.
 

Professor Russell Pierre to Deliver Inaugural Professorial Lecture April 24

Professor Russell Pierre of the Department of Child and Adolescent Health, Faculty of Medical Sciences will deliver his Inaugural Professorial lecture on Thursday, April 24 at 5:30pm. at the Sir Kenneth Standard Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Medical Sciences Teaching and Research Complex 
 
In this lecture, entitled “Circle of Life – The face of Paediatric Aids…the Millennial Generation,”  Professor Pierre will focus on Paediatric HIV/AIDS and examine its evolution through three decades.
 

Multiple Actor Boy Awards for University Players

The University Players, the resident theatre company at the Philip Sherlock Centre, The University of the West Indies Mona campus won Actor Boy awards in five of their nominated categories at a ceremony held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Monday, April 14. 
 
Dr Brian Heap, Head of the Centre received the award for Best Director for his staging of Samuel Hillary’s engaging play ‘Departure in the Dark’ marking the sixth time he has won in this particular category. Nadean Rawlins also received the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her vivid portrayal of Mrs Lilian Martin in the same production, which also won the award for Best Drama.
 

University of Costa Rica to visit Mona April 22

The Office of Student Services and Development UWI Mona will host the University of Costa Rica at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus from April 22 – May 5.
 
The contingent of staff and students will be visiting under the Annual Exchange Programme. The visiting students are staying in various halls of residence on the Campus and will participate in several outreach activities.
 
The OSSD extends a warm Mona hospitality to our Costa Rican friends on behalf of The UWI Mona.

SALISES Tribute to Professor Emeritus Norman Girvan

On behalf of the entire faculty, staff and student body  of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES),  I wish to express the profound sorrow that we feel at the passing of Norman Girvan, Professor Emeritus, the University of the West Indies and first Director of SALISES.
 

UWI Mona’s Simone Badal McCreath receives prestigious Award for cancer research

Research Fellow at the Natural Products Institute at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, Dr Simone Badal McCreath is one of five women chemists worldwide to be honoured with the Elsevier Foundation Awards for Early Career Women Scientists in the Developing World, for research that looks to nature for ways to address cancer and other medical problems.
 
Simone Badal McCreath’s work covers the screening of Jamaican natural and synthetic compounds for potential anti-cancer and cancer-preventive properties. The anti-cancer research conducted was done under the supervision of Dr. Rupika Delgoda.
 

UWI signs MOU for Medical Marijuana Research

The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona today, Wednesday, April 9, 2014,  signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with GenCanna Global, Inc.,  trading as Strains of Hope, to facilitate the conduct of research into the medicinal properties of marijuana (cannabis sativa).
 
The agreement will be effective for a period of three years, and was signed by Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of The UWI, Mona Campus, Professor Archibald McDonald, and Strains of Hope’s founder/director Mr. Josh Stanley at a ceremony held in the Council Room at The UWI, Mona Campus.
