UWI signs First-of-a-kind Research Agreement with NCB Jamaica

The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona and National Commercial Bank (NCB) Jamaica on Thursday, February 20 signed an agreement under which NCB will provide US$953,000 to finance a programme of applied research focusing on strategies for corporate renewal and transformation in the Caribbean region.
 
The programme, which is the first of its kind in the region aims to generate new knowledge to guide Jamaican firms on how to develop dynamic capabilities and strategies for profitable growth. 
The agreement was signed by Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of The UWI, Mona Campus, Professor Archibald McDonald, and NCB’s Group Managing Director, Mr. Patrick Hylton, at a ceremony held in the Council Room at The UWI, Mona Campus.

Remembering Stuart Hall - The University Archives

The University Archives joins with the world’s academic community in remembering the life’s work and contributions of Dr Stuart Hall, the ‘father of multiculturalism’.


Hall, a Jamaican, laid the foundation for the study of culture, especially popular culture, with its identities, expressions, nuances and complexities. His focus on Caribbean identities, in particular, influenced many Caribbean scholarly works.

Dennis Walcott appointed Honorary Distinguished Fellow

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce that Mr Dennis Walcott, former Chancellor of the New York Department of Education, has been appointed Honorary Distinguished Fellow of The University. 
 
As Chancellor in the New York City Administration under then Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Chancellor Walcott oversaw a system of more than 1,700 schools, with 1.1 million students, 136,000 employees and a US$23 billion budget.  Over a 12-year period, there were transformative changes in education in New York City, including a 40% increase in the graduation rate, a reduction by 50% of the dropout rate, and crime in schools reduced by 93%.
 

UWI and Brazil students on exchange programme

The Department of Library & Information Studies (DLIS) and The Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) will participate in UNESCO-UNAOC UNITWIN Student Exchange Programme on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue, (MILID University Network), February 15-22, 2014. 
 
Students Gemmel Drakes (DLIS) and Alpha Obika (CARIMAC) will go to University of Sao Paulo, Brazil and the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, Morocco respectively.  DLIS & CARIMAC will host two students, Breno Benedykt from University of Sao Paulo and Eid Makboul, Cairo University for the period.

When the Star Ariel, a British South American Airways Corporation airliner vanished on January 17, 1949, the original Royal Charter incorporating the University College of the West Indies was also lost. The terms of what was the first official document of the forerunner to The University of the West Indies would later be incorporated in Letters Patent which were sealed and sent as an official replacement, received in November 1949.

 

A Tribute to Stuart Hall by CARIMAC

The Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), at the University of the West Indies, has learnt with deep regret of the passing in the United Kingdom of world renowned Jamaican sociologist. cultural anthropologist and communications theorist Professor Stuart Hall.
 
He was ailing over the last several years and died yesterday (February 10, 2014), one (1) week after his 82nd birthday.
 

Former Prime Minister Bruce Golding to serve as Honorary Distinguished Fellow, UWI

Former Prime Minister of Jamaica, The Hon. Bruce Golding, is to serve as an Honorary Distinguished Fellow at The University of the West Indies (UWI), effective February 1, 2014.
 
 The 5-year non-salaried appointment will afford Mr. Golding an opportunity to undertake empirical research and to offer recommendations with emphasis on public administration and economic development. He is also expected to develop vital linkages between the public and private sectors with a view to identifying and promoting practical areas for dynamic collaboration.

First Academic Conference on Football heads to Mona, April

The Centre for Leadership and Governance (Department of Government) and the Institute of Caribbean Studies, both of the University of the West Indies Mona Campus, will host the Inaugural Academic Conference on International Football on April 16 – 17, 2014.

The Conference will be sited on the Mona Campus at venues to be announced. The theme for this year’s Conference reads “Ideology, Culture, Politics and Everyday Life”.

CARIMAC to graduate first group of animators

Ceremonies to be held in Kingston and Montego Bay

Jamaica and the Caribbean’s largest group of trained cartoon animators will graduate Saturday February 8 from a six-month intensive animation course in a programme offered by the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at the University of the West Indies (UWI).

A total of forty three (43) trained animators will receive their certificates of achievement and completion in two graduation ceremonies to be held respectively at the UWI’s Mona Campus in Kingston and at the University’s Western Jamaica Campus in Montego Bay, during the second week of February.

Densil Williams promoted to the rank of Professor

The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona congratulates Dr. Densil A. Williams, Deputy Executive Director of the Mona School of Business and Management  on his promotion to the rank of Professor as well as his appointment as Executive Director of the Mona School of Business and Management. 
 
Densil Williams holds the Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree with first class honours in Economics and Management Studies and a Master of Science (MSc) degree in International Business from The UWI, Mona. In 2006, he obtained a Ph.D. in International Business and Strategy from the Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, in the UK.
