Research Day
The UWI Mona Campus will again host Research Day from January 29 to 30, 2004. The guest speaker at the opening ceremony which takes place at 10:00 a.m. on January 29, is Dr. the Hon. Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada. The opening ceremony will take place at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. During the two days members of the public will be able to see an exhibition of research activities being carried out by various departments at UWI, Mona.
Submission of Applications
The deadline for receipt of applications for admission to the University of the West Indies is January 10, 2004. Commencing January 5, 2004, applications may be submitted to UWI representatives at the following venues and times: Mona Campus up to January 10; Mondays – Thursdays from 8:30a.m. – 7:30 p.m.; Fridays, 8:30 a.m. - 4-30 p.m. and Saturday, January 10 from 10:00a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Venue: the Assembly Hall. Mico Teachers’ College, 1a Marescaux Road, Kingston 5 from Wednesday, January 7 – Friday, January 9 from 9:00 a.m.
Telephone Directory Recycling Project
The Sanitation and Grounds Section of the Maintenance Department will be collecting old telephone directories as part of the Cable and Wireless recycling project between January 19 and 23, 2004. The section is asking that members of the Mona Campus community store their old directories until they are collected. A schedule of the collection dates and times will be circulated shortly. Third Annual Perinatal Audit and Symposium
The Section of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI Mona will host its Third Annual Perinatal Audit and Symposium on February 6 and 7, 2004. Guest speaker at the opening ceremony will be Dr. Parul Jayaker, a specialist in genetics and disorders of metabolism from the Miami Children’s Hospital. The Audit will take place on Friday, February 6 in the morning while skills workshops are planned for the afternoon. These workshops are suitable for trainees, doctors and nurses.
University Health Centre Closure
The UWI Health Centre will close at 4:30 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m. until Friday January 16, 2004. The Health Centre will revert to the normal closing time of 7:30 p.m. as of Monday January 19, 2004. Any inconvenience caused by this change is sincerely regretted.
20th Bi-ennial Symposium
The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences at UWI Mona will host its 20th Bi-ennial Symposium from January 4 to 8. This year the participants will focus on Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry. The symposium’s opening ceremony will take place on Monday, January 5 at 9:30 a.m. in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre 5. There will also be a reception for conference participants at 7:30 p.m. at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. Participants will come from the Caribbean as well as from the United States, Canada and Japan.
Department of Life Sciences Receives Funding
The Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences at UWI Mona, has received funding in the amount of just over $4.5 million dollars from the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica. The grant is for the Department’s mangrove ecosystem’s inventory project. The Department will, over 18 months, develop an inventory of mangroves which will be used to create illustrated field guides to the fauna and flora in the island’s mangroves. The project will involve the collection and photographing of animals and plants for inclusion in the field guides.
Distinguished Lecture Tour
The Institute of Caribbean Studies, UWI Mona will host Caribbean Writer, George Lamming during the week of January 11 as part of a Distinguished Lecture Tour funded by the Ford Foundation. The activities planned for Mr. Lamming include an interview on Radio Mona scheduled for Monday, December 12 at 12: 00 noon. He will then meet with post graduate students in Cultural Studies at 5:30 p.m. in the Multi-Functional Room of the Main Library. On Tuesday, January 13 Mr.
Policy Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation
The Mona Campus will also host a Policy Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation from January 28 to 30. The conference’s objectives include developing a sound intellectual framework for understanding and dealing with the challenges facing the Caribbean in its efforts to use science, technology and innovation to improve the standard of living. It also aims to develop policy mechanisms for learning and taking advantage of science technology and the innovation process.
