Graduate Recruitment Programme

The Office of Placement and Career Services at UWI, Mona is organising its annual Graduate Recruitment Programme for finalising students for March 29 to April 26. The programme allows employers who require candidates to fill permanent vacancies in their organisations to interview graduating students. All finalising students are asked to collect their packages from the Office of Placement and Career Services. They are also asked to note that all interviews will be held at the Office of Placement and Career Services unless stated otherwise.

Language Laboratory Courses

The Language Laboratory is offering courses in beginners’ Spanish and French Levels I and II starting Monday, January 26. Lunchtime classes starts at 12:00 noon while evening classes will start at 5:30 p.m. The courses will last for 10 weeks with 4 hours of teaching per week. Policy Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation

The Mona Campus will also host a Policy Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation from January 28 to 30 as part of Research Day activities. The conference’s objectives include developing a sound intellectual framework for understanding and dealing with the challenges facing the Caribbean in its efforts to use science, technology and innovation to improve the standard of living. It also aims to develop policy mechanisms for learning and taking advantage of science, technology and the innovation process.

Research Day

The UWI Mona Campus will again host Research Day from January 29 to 30, 2004. The guest speaker at the opening ceremony which takes place at 10:00 a.m. on January 29, is Dr. the Hon. Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada. The opening ceremony will take place at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. During the two days members of the public and the Campus community will be able to see an exhibition of research activities being carried out by various departments at UWI, Mona.

20th Bi-ennial Symposium

The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences at UWI Mona will host its 20th Bi-ennial Symposium from January 4 to 8. This year the participants will focus on Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry. The symposium’s opening ceremony will take place on Monday, January 5 at 9:30 a.m. in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre 5. There will also be a reception for conference participants at 7:30 p.m. at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. Participants will come from the Caribbean as well as from the United States, Canada and Japan.

Condolences

It is with regret that the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus announces the passing of the following two students: Miss Claudette Jean Smith who was pursuing a MA in Heritage Studies, Faculty of Humanities and Education and Mr. Osei Barry Davis who was pursuing a MBBS (Class of 2005), Faculty of Medical Sciences.

Distinguished Lecture Tour

The Institute of Caribbean Studies, UWI Mona will host Caribbean writer, George Lamming during the week of January 11 as part of a Distinguished Lecture Tour funded by the Ford Foundation. The activities planned for Mr. Lamming include an interview on Radio Mona scheduled for Monday, December 12 at 12: 00 noon. He will then meet with post graduate students in Cultural Studies at 5:30 p.m. in the Multi-Functional Room of the Main Library. On Tuesday, January 13, Mr.

First Call for Papers

Members of the Campus community are invited to submit articles for the first issue of the Caribbean Journal of Psychology, beibg produed by the Psychology Unit of the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work. Please submit articles, short reports, commentaries or book reviews by February 27th 2004. Articles should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication somewhere else, and should be no longer than 3,000 words. Two copies of the document should be submitted.

IDU Teaching Skills Workshop

The Instructional Development Unit, UWI, Mona will present a Teaching Skills Workshop from January 6 to 8, 2004 from 9:00 a.m. – to 4:30 p.m. each day. The venue is the I.D.U. Training Room (Upstairs the Interfaculty Lecture Theatre). The Teaching Skills Workshop is an annual event put on by the Instructional Development Unit.
