Dr Leith L. Dunn is a Jamaican social
scientist. She holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics
and Political Science, a Bachelor's degree (Hons) in Languages and
Social Sciences and a M.Sc. in Sociology and Social Psychology from
the University of the West Indies.
Dr Dunn has been a part time Lecturer at the University for the
West Indies, Mona (Jamaica) for a number of years. She has taught
in the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication, the Regional
Coordinating Unit of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies
(CGDS) and the University Hospital of the West Indies. She served
as Acting Regional Coordinator for the CGDS Regional Coordinating
Unit for the 2000-2001 academic year. She has also given guest lectures
at universities in North America and Europe.
Dr. Dunn has over 20 years experience as a project analyst, trainer,
academic and consultant with local, regional and international development
agencies, governments, the Commonwealth as well as civil society
organisations including the church. The geographical scope of her
work covers the Caribbean and the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia.
She is fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French.
Dr Dunn’s research, publications and consultancy work span
issues such as:
• Globalisation
• Gender analysis
• Trade policy related to Caribbean development
• Labour (including child labour and export processing
zones)
• Tourism development
• Social policy analysis and development
• Environmental education
• Conflict resolution and mediation training
• Institutional strengthening, capacity building and
process consultation
• Strategic planning and organizational change management
• Human rights education on women, children, disabled
persons and the elderly
• Participatory research methodologies
She has conducted child labour studies in Jamaica, the Bahamas,
Barbados and Tobago for the International Labour Organisation (ILO)
and has completed several research publications on child-related
issues for UNICEF, UNFPA, Save the Children UK and the United Church
of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.
Dr Dunn served as an Advisor to the Commonwealth Foundation between
1988 and 1999, and has written briefing papers for Commonwealth
Ministers Meetings on behalf of the Commonwealth Secretariat. She
also served as a member of the Commonwealth Observer Group for the
2002 Presidential elections in Zimbabwe.
Leith is married to Dr Hopeton S Dunn, Communications Policy Analyst
and Senior Lecturer at the University of the West Indies Mona (Jamaica).
They have two children and have co-authored a number of publications.
The most recent of these is ‘People and Tourism: Issues and
Attitudes in the Jamaican Hospitality Industry’, Arawak Publications,
Kingston 2002.
