Syllabus:

Semester 1


1. The Development of National Language Policies:

1) The decision making structures at the level of the state,
2) Language attitudes at the level of individual language users,
3) The interaction between 1) and 2).

2. The Research Project: Surveying and Analysing National Language Attitudes:

Week 1

Introduction to the language survey background and its relevance to language policy.

Week 2

Designing and preparing the Language Attitude Questionnaire.

Week 3

National survey methods and data collection training and Field Work..

Week 4
Debriefing and discussion of field experience.

Week 5-6
Modelling of survey data analysis and discussion of student research project design (whilst data collected is being coded).
Week 7
Presentation to students of overall findings and the assigning of specific bodies of data to be analysed as part of individual student Research Project
Weeks 8-9
Language Attitude Surveys within the literature on Language Policy.
Week 10
Submission of 1st Draft of Research Project Report.
Weeks 11-12
Feedback on drafts, as well as review of the impact of research findings on language policy in Jamaica.

Course Administration and Overview of Language Planning issues.
Identity consciousness, nationalism and language: The relationship between concepts such as nation, state and language.
Readings: Any good introductory Sociolinguistics Text such as
Wardaugh (1986) or Romaine (2001).

Week 2 (23 Jan 06):

The functional domains of language and language status: What constitutes an official language and the relationship between this and notions such as diglossia?
Readings: Wardaugh (1986) Chapter 4.
Tutorial: Frequently used sociolinguistic terms


Week 3 (30 Jan 06):

The impact of technology e.g.; writing, the print press, electronic media and the emergence of national language.
Readings: Ong (1982) p 93-103 & 117-133. Illich (1981) p 39-43.
