Each assignment should have a cover sheet with the following information:

  • Student's Name & I.D. Number
  • Course Code
  • Tutor's Name
  • Day and Time of Class
  • ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION (AS GIVEN)

Please pay careful attention to the due dates of all assignments. All in-course assignments are to be submitted to the tutor during your regular seminar time. Late Assignments will not be accepted.

Plagiarism

Students found guilty of plagiarism in coursework and/or final examination will be penalized. Please refer to “Cheating”, Item 73 in the Examination Regulations for First Degrees, Diplomas and Certificated.

Sitting of In-Course Tests

You are required to sit each test at the time and place stipulated on your schedule

Medical Considerations

If you miss an assignment because of serious illness, please inform your tutor or the Department Office (Language, Linguistics and Philosophy) and submit a valid medical certificate with a covering letter within 7 days of the date of the missed assignment. All such communication should bear your name, ID number, tutor's name, and the day and time of your regular class.

SEMINARS:

You are required to attend one (1) seminar each week. Please take your course outline and the required texts for reading and writing assignments to each class. Your tutor is also available for consultation during published hours. You are expected to attend consultation regularly to deal with matters such as the following:

•  to seek clarification which cannot be given in the limited class time;
•  to discuss assignments/your progress in general or specific terms; and most importantly,

•  to receive individual help with areas of weakness identified by you or your tutor; you may therefore be required to attend one or more hours of instruction in the Writing Centre.

N.B: You must be prepared to undertake extensive study-reading of the course materials as well as diligent out-of-class practice in order to benefit from the seminars and ultimately to do well in the course.

  LANGUAGE BACKGROUND:

Students who have been educated in a language other than English should advise their tutors of this in their first seminar/tutorial.

Students who have received an English language education but who require assistance with English grammar and mechanics should register at the Writing Centre by the end of Week 3.
