FD14A: WRITING IN THE DISCIPLINES

This course is the alternative to FD10A, and along with UC10B, is the alternative to UC10A. Students with a pass in CAPE Communication Studies would already have covered some of the content in FD10A and UC 120. This course will offer such students an alternative in which they will acquire other essential writing skills, as well as an appreciation of the manner in which academic language reflects the thinking within each discipline.

At the end of the course students should be able to:

1. demonstrate an awareness of the defining elements of academic discourse used in different disciplines.
2. critically evaluate and discuss a variety of texts intended for specialist and general audiences.
3. write competent summaries (descriptive, informative or evaluative) of texts in different disciplines
4. write in a variety of formats on discipline-related issues for specialist as well as general audiences
5. use approved citation and documentation techniques in written papers
6. use writing to reflect their learning experiences
