Course Rationale


1) The Introduction of Research in Philosophy.
2) Reading Classical and Non-classical Works in Philosophy.
3) Understanding the background to the works of each author.
4) Detailed reading of the works of a major philosopher, such as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Hume, Russell, Kant, Marx, Husserl, Heideggar, Sarttre, Merleau-Ponty, Ricoeur, Gadamer, Wittgenstein, Whitehead, McTaggart, Ryle, Austine, Ayer, Quine, Davidson, Nagel, Strawson, Dummett, Putnam, Kripke, Rorty, Augustine, Amo, Bodunrin, Sodipo, Du Bois, Garvey, Oruka, Hountondji, C.L.R. James, Wiredu, Van Sertima, Diop, Mazurui, etc.

5) Writing a research paper under supervision of the lecturer for the course as the culmination of the work in the research course.

 

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course students should be able to:

xii) Identify issues in philosophy and/or themes in the works of a major philosophical figure;
xiii) Critically analyze the issues and/or theme of interest to him/herself;
xiv) Comment on the issues and/or theme and its validity and/or applicability to contemporary experience; and
xv) Show ability to carefully present research with proper documentation of sources


Course Assessment:

1) Two (2) extended essays of at least 2500 words each: One in Semester I … 20%
One in Semester II … 20%
