Department of Literatures in English
Welcome to the Department of Literatures in English at the University of the West Indies, Mona. The department has a distinguished history of excellence in English studies, with particular emphasis on research and teaching in Anglophone Caribbean literature. Founded in 1950, as the then Department of English, we have produced distinguished alumni who have contributed immensely to Caribbean literary scholarship and creative writing. We are committed to providing a quality education for our students by introducing them to the passionate and rigorous study of imaginative literature in the collegial atmosphere of a small department with large scholarly aims and objectives.
Although our strengths are primarily in Caribbean literary and cultural studies, the Department of Literatures in English at UWI, Mona offers a wide variety of courses ranging from Medieval and Renaissance Literature to Reggae Poetry. Students are exposed to British and American literature, the literature of postcolonial regions such as Africa, the Caribbean, Canada, South Asia, Australia and New Zealand, literary theory, film studies, and creative writing. Our faculty members have published widely in academic and creative fields, and they strive to uphold the Department’s reputation for student–friendly innovative teaching.
The Department of Literatures in English invites you to be a part of our distinguished tradition in Caribbean literary scholarship and creative writing.
