The Social History Project (SHP)
In 1979, the then Department of History (now the Department of History
and Archaeology), University of the West Indies, Mona, established
the Social History Project (SHP). Though the name presupposes an inclination
to undertake subject matters solely in social history, this has not
been the case as it was very early decided that the focus of the SHP
would be an amalgam of all types of history, including, social, intellectual,
political and economic history.
The Social History Project encourages the study of Jamaican social
history in the period from emancipation onward, using the tools
of oral history as well as literary and other forms of documentation.
In keeping with its objectives, the SHP continues today to facilitate
the work of graduate students in their research. In addition, it
has promoted the preservation and documentation of material relating
to Jamaica’s social history and facilitated the dissemination
of research findings through publication and the hosting of workshops
and symposia.
