An important
layer of the history of Jamaica is embodied in the history
of women. Traditionally submerged and therefore rendered 'invisible",
women's history is increasingly being researched and presented,
providing a new and deeper dimension of understanding of the
nation's heritage. The documents contained in this booklet
provides for students in particular, and for the women's movement
more broadly, insights into the diverse experiences and opinions
of women in Jamaica in the early twentieth century. Their
views on their condition and position, on the nature of the
society in which they lived, the ways in which they sought
to influence the realities which they faced, raise many issues
and provoke analysis on how women's lives and outlook were
shaped by class, race, gender, and nationality.
