Annual Sports Awards Ceremony

The UWI, Mona Sports Department will host its Annual Awards Ceremony on Saturday, September 27 at 7 p.m. The venue is the Multi-purpose Room at the Rex Nettleford Hall. The Ceremony will honour outstanding performers in Sports for the 2002/2003 academic year.

Change in Date for Application

The Office of Graduate Studies and Research is now inviting applications for Research and Publications and Graduate Awards. The Mona Campus Research, Publications and Graduate Awards Committee will consider all applications received by 4:30 p.m. on September 26, 2003. Applications received after the closing date will be considered at the next meeting in January 2004. Dr. Omkar Parshad

Dr. Omkar Parshad, Professor of Endocrinology in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medical Sciences will deliver his Inaugural Address on Friday, September 26. The lecture, which will take place in the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, University Hospital at 5:00 p.m. is entitled “Know Your Thyroid”. The public is invited.

Facilitating Students Learning

The Instructional Development Unit will present the first in its series of workshops on September 25 from 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. The presenter is Professor Trevor Munroe of the Department of Government. Mona Campus Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony

Some fifteen hundred new students participated in the Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony held at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus on Thursday, September 18. Racquel Yolanda Smith, the undergraduate student who entered the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus with the best academic results symbolically signed the register on behalf of the new students. Professor Elsa Leo Rhynie, Pro Vice Chancellor, Board for Undergraduate Studies, who represented the Vice Chancellor, formally recognized the new students.

Ninth Great Book Fair

The University of the West Indies Press will host its Ninth Great Book Fair from Monday, September 29 to Friday, October 3, at the Old Dramatic Lecture Theatre, the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Professor Carolyn Cooper

Dr. Carolyn Cooper, Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies in the Department of Literatures in English, will deliver her Inaugural Lecture on Thursday, September 25 at 6:00 p.m. at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. Her lecture is entitled Professing Slackness: Language, Authority and Power Within the Academy and Without. The public is invited.

Public Lecture

The Peruvian Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency Humberto Urteaga Dulanto will give a Public Lecture on “Pancho Fierro – Black Peruvian Painter”. The lecture will take place on Thursday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Blue Room of the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. Photographs of the work of the painter will be on exhibition. The public is invited to attend.

UWI/Colombia Exchange Programme

A group of eight recent graduates of the Faculty of Humanities and Education at UWI, Mona and two from the Cave Hill Campus are currently attached to several Universities in Colombia as teaching assistants of English Language for one year. This arrangement falls under an agreement between the UWI and the Instituto Colombiano Para el Credito en el Exterior in Colombia.

2003/4 Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony

The 2003/4 Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony for new students at the Mona Campus will be held on Thursday, September 18 in the Assembly Hall beginning at 4:00 p.m. The President of the Guild of Students, Junior Rose will greet the new students, there will be a welcome address by the Principal of the Campus, Professor Kenneth Hall and remarks by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rex Nettleford. At this ceremony, one of the new students will on behalf of the new students sign the matriculation register and the University Singers will perform.
