UWI, Mona Western Jamaica Campus Hosts First Carol Service

The UWI, Mona- Western Jamaica Campus will host its inaugural Carol Service on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 4 pm at the St. James Parish Church. The University Singers will perform on this occasion.

UWI, Mona Joins in Marking World AIDS Day

The UWI Student Emergency Response Team (UWISERT) presents Red Ribbon Café: An Evening of Jazz and Poetry on Friday, November 27, 2009 at 7 pm at Pages Café, UWI, Mona. The event is designed to raise awareness about the AIDS pandemic through the Arts and in recognition of World AIDS Day, marked on December 1. The university community is invited to attend.

Upcoming activities are planned to mark World AIDS Day including: Fashion Show on Saturday, November 28, Walk and Talk About HIV/AIDS on December 1 and HIV/ AIDS High School Poetry Competition Selection of winner on December 1.

Book Launch

The UWI Press hosts the launch of two books by UWI academics, Dr. Matthew Smith and Dr. Kathleen Monteith on Friday, November 27, 2009 at 6 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre.

“Beyond Guns, Gaza and Gully”

The Marcus Garvey Movement at UWI, Mona and the Taylor Hall Debating Society have organized a forum titled, “Beyond Guns, Gaza and Gully: Garvey as an Alternative Network” on Friday, November 20, 2009 at 5:30 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.

The Forum features presentations from Dr. Clinton Hutton, Lecturer, Department of Government, UWI, Osayimwese Osagboro, Teacher, Poet and MPhil Candidate and Leon Burrell, Marcus Garvey Movement. The event will also feature drumming, poetry and drama.

The university community is invited.

Course and Lecturer Assessment

The Course and Lecturer Assessment exercise carried out each semester is currently in progress. All undergraduates are being asked to participate by completing honestly and frankly the questionnaires when circulated in class. The exercise is completely confidential and is a practice in universities world-wide. It provides an opportunity for students to provide feedback about the teaching and the course offering. Lecturers are asked to let their students know that they are interested in this critical feed-back.

The information gathered is used to strengthen the teaching/learning process and is an important input in the external validation of the UWI degree.

Public Lecture

The Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy will host a public lecture entitled, “Rewriting English: English as a Lingua Franca, World Englishes and English in Translation.” Professor Bruce Horner, Endowed Chair in Rhetoric and Composition, University of Louisville Kentucky, USA will deliver the lecture on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 5 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) UWI, Mona.

“From the Womb to Adolescence”

The Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI, Mona hosts its 18th annual Research Conference under the theme, “Child Health: From the Womb to Adolescence” from November 11-13, 2009. The Conference will begin with an Opening Ceremony on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 5:30 pm. Speakers at the Opening Ceremony include: Honourable Andrew Holness, Minister of Education; Chief Medical Officer, Ministry of Health, Dr. Sheila Campbell-Forrester; Everton Hannam, General Secretary, Jamaica National Commission for UNESCO and Lola Ramocan, Quality Education and Early Childhood Development Specialist, UNICEF. The Distinguished Kenneth Standard Lecture will be delivered by Professor Alan Jackson, Director, Institute of Human Nutrition, University of Southampton, UK as part of the Opening Ceremony.

Faculty of Humanities and Education Awards Ceremony

The Faculty of Humanities and Education will host its annual Awards Ceremony on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 2 pm in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona. 

The Ceremony will recognize those students who have excelled academically in the Faculty during the 2008/2009 academic year.

Members of the University community are invited to attend.

Dress for Success

“Preparing for and Attending the Interview” is the title of this week’s seminar in the World of Work Seminar Series organized by Placement and Career Services in the Office of Student Services and Development, UWI, Mona.  The seminar takes place on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 3 pm at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre. The presenter will be Judith Dillion, Human Resources Manager, Grace Kennedy Remittances Services Limited.

Launch of Engineering Programme at UWI, Mona

The University of the West Indies, Mona will officially launch its Bachelor of Science degree Programme in Engineering on Monday, November 9, 2009 at 7:30 am at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. Senator Dr. the Honourable Ronald Robinson, Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade will be the guest speaker on this occasion.
