“Souls of Black Girls”
The Institute for Gender and Development Studies, Mona Unit has organized a film showing on Friday, October 16, 2009 at 5 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona. The featured film is “Souls of Black Girls.”
Lunch Hour Concert Features Brazilian Music with Patricia Reis

The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts and the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures partner to host “Bossa Nova in Kingston” on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 1 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre. “Bossa Nova” is a lunch hour concert featuring Brazilian music performed by Patricia Reis backed by a Jamaican band. The event is designed to expose the university community to various cultures.
The show is sponsored by the Embassy of Brazil and is a part of a series of three shows named “Bossa Nova in Kingston”. The first show took place in September at the Bank of Jamaica auditorium.
UWI students and staff are invited to attend. Admission is free.
Minister of Commerce Speaks at Book Launch

The Hon. Karl Samuda, Minister of Commerce will deliver the keynote address at the launch of the book “Exporting the Small and Micro Enterprise”. The book is authored by Dr. Densil Williams, Lecturer in the Department of Management Studies, UWI, Mona. The Launch takes place on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at the Council Room, UWI, Mona.
The university community is invited.
Open Day Addresses Sexual and Reproductive Issues

The Hugh Wynter Fertility Management Unit will host an Open Day on Thursday October 15, 2009 starting at 10 am in the Main Medical Theatre. The Day’s theme is “Sexual and Reproductive Health: Issues and Answers”. Activities will include an Opening Ceremony at 10 am where Dr. Sheila Campbell Forrester, Senior Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health will deliver the main address. Panel discussions will follow the Opening Ceremony in the Medical Lecture Theatres. An exhibition is also mounted of the Unit’s work and displays of products and services by several health related organizations. The Open Day will address matter related to “Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health”, “STIs, HIV/AIDS and Behaviour Change” and “Male and Female Infertility”.
UWI Mona Staff and Student Wellness Survey 2009

The University Health Centre has received funding from the Principal's New Initiative Fund to conduct a survey of staff and student wellness. Persons will be randomly selected for participation in the survey which will start in October 2009. Information provided will be held in the strictest confidence. This information will ONLY be used for the purpose of assessing individual health and referring persons for care and treatment where necessary.
The study seeks to assess the health status of University staff and students and determine how many persons are affected by lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity.
Call for Papers and Panels: Freedom and Power in the Caribbean: The Work of Gordon K. Lewis

The Centre for Caribbean Thought (CCT) UWI, Mona, in association with Africana Studies at Brown University and the Institute of Caribbean Studies, University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras has organised the 7th Caribbean Reasonings Conference entitled Freedom and Power in the Caribbean: the Work of Gordon K. Lewis. The Conference is scheduled for June 3-5, 2010 at the University of the West Indies, Mona.
There is limited space on the conference programme for individual papers and panels, thus it is suggested that proposals that fall within the following broad categories will be given serious consideration:
Quality Inquiry Conference

The School of Education at the University of the West Indies, Mona presents the Quality Inquiry in the Caribbean Conference on October 30-31, 2009 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre and Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) respectively. The Conference is themed, “Qualitative Research for Caribbean Development and will feature keynote addresses by Professor Gloria Ladson-Billings, University of Madison, Professor Fracis Stage, New York City University and from UWI, Mona, Professor Aggrey Brown and Professor Barry Chevannes.
“Reggae Music as Cultural Bridge between Two Worlds”

The Department of Literatures in English, in association with the Institute of Caribbean Studies has organized a public lecture entitled "It a go Dread Inna Switzerland: Reggae Music as Cultural Bridge between Two Worlds". The lecture takes place on Friday, October 16, 2009 in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) at 3 pm. Swiss journalist and music historian, Marc Ismail's will deliver the lecture. The lecture is the inaugural seminar presentation for the 2009 -2010 academic year in the Department's Staff / Postgraduate Student Seminar Series.
Health Forum
The University Health Centre in collaboration with the Caribbean Tobacco Control Project hosts a Health Forum themed, “Yes We Can…Choose Health not Tobacco.” The Form takes place on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 1 pm at the Undercroft.
Free blood pressure checks will be provided by the Heart Foundation of Jamaica on the occasion. All UWI students and staff are invited to attend.
Welcome Service and Symbolic Matriculation Signing Ceremony
The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts its Welcome Service and Symbolic Matriculation Signing Ceremony on Sunday, October 4, 2009 at 9 am at the University Chapel, UWI, Mona. First year students and staff are invited to attend. A symbolic signing of the Matriculation Register will take place at the Ceremony.
A Matriculation Ceremony is the occasion on which students are formally recognized as members of a university. Their acceptance into the academic community is marked by the signing of the Matriculation Register.
All new students are required to sign the Matriculation Register on Tuesday, October 6 or Wednesday October 7, 2009 between 10 am to 5:30 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.
