26th Elsa Goveia Lecture

The Department of History and Archaeology, UWI, Mona will host the 26th annual Elsa Goveia Lecture under the theme, “Powerless Masters: The Curious Decline of Jamaican Sugar Planters in the Foundational Period of British Abolitionism.” The Lecture will be delivered by Professor Trevor Burnard, Professor of the History of the Americas, History and Comparative American Studies, University of Warwick. The Lecture takes place on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 5 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA).

Literacy Symposium

“Making the Literacy Improvement a Reality for Adolescents and At-Risk Youths” is the theme of this year’s Literacy Symposium hosted by the School of Education, UWI, Mona. The Symposium takes place on March 11-12, 2010 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre starting at 9 am daily.

The keynote speakers include: Dr. Patricia Saul, Deputy Principal, Erdiston Teachers’ Training College and Immediate Past President, Barbados Association of Reading and Dr. Constance Weaver, Heckert Professor of Reading and Writing, Miami University, Ohio. The Symposium will involve workshops and panel presentations on topics including: Literacy and Social Justice, Best Practice in Assessment, Recovering At Risk Youth and Literacy Across the Curriculum.

UWI Chess Tournament 2010

The UWI Chess Society at UWI, Mona will host the "JNBS UWI Open 2010"on March 15-21, 2010 at the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona. This year players from several local and overseas tertiary institutions will participate in the Chess Tournament which features International Master Marko Zivanic from the University of Texas and International Master Giorgi Margvelashvili from the University of Maryland.

Chess players at all levels will be facilitated during the tournament, designed to develop chess at the local level and expand the mental capacity of students through involvement in Chess.

“States of Freedom: Freedom of States" Symposium

The University of the West Indies, Mona and Duke University will be hosting a symposium under the theme " States of Freedom: Freedom of States," to be held at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona, on June 17-18, 2010. The symposium explores questions of freedom and governance generated from the heart of creolization; a process that forged a uniquely global exploitation of discrete island territories for economic activity, regional influence, and military advantage by many of the major European metropoles.

Career Expo 2010

“Flexibility and Creativity for Survival in the Global Work Place” is the theme of this year’s annual Career Expo organized by the Office of Placement and Career Services in the Office of Student Services and Development, UWI, Mona. The Career Expo which is scheduled for February 25-26, 2010 concludes the Career Month activities.

UWI, Mona and PIOJ Host Public Seminar on the IMF Agreement

“The Jamaican Economy: Implications of the IMF Agreement”  is the titled of the public seminar being hosted by the Department of Economics, UWI, Mona in collaboration with the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ). The seminar takes place on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 6 pm at the Multifunctional Room, UWI, Mona.

Mona Homecoming Celebrations Continue with Parade & Flag Raising and Caribbean Day

The UWI Mona Homecoming Celebrations continue on Thursday, February 18, 2010 with a Parade starting at the Students’ Union at 3 pm and ends at the Assembly Hall to kick off the Flag Raising Ceremony scheduled for 5 pm.  The march will include representatives from the alumni, halls of residences, island associations, staff, clubs, and societies lead by members of the first class of the University and accompanied by entertainers. The flags of contributing countries will be flown as a symbol of the regional nature of the University.

Elite and International Athletes to Have Season’s Debut at UWI Invitational Meet

Local elite athletes are expected to make their season’s debut during the special Olympic Development session at the 8th UWI Gatorade Invitational Track Meet which takes place on Saturday, February 20, 2010 starting at 9 am at the National Stadium. The line up also includes a dynamic team of High Performance Training Centre athletes from Costa Rica, athletes from the Netherland Antilles, The Cayman Islands and the Bahamas, collegiate teams and top high school athletes from Holmwood Technical, Edwin Allen, Vere Technical, Kingston College, Calabar High, Jamaica College and St. Jago High.

Arbitration Workshop Hosted at UWI, Mona

The Faculty of Law at UWI, Mona will host a second seminar as part of its Mona Law Series entitled, “Modernizing the Framework for Arbitration in Jamaica.” The workshop is scheduled for Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 10 am at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. Attorney General and Minister of Justice, the Honourable Dorothy Lightbourne will speak on the occasion.

The workshop is intended to bring to the fore the need for modernization to the Jamaican arbitration regime. It will also seek to assist in the formulation of a concrete plan of action for a modern Arbitration Law.

SALISES Launches Flagship Research Project, “Fifty-Fifty”

The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at UWI, Mona launches its flagship research project entitled Fifty-Fifty: Critical Reflections in a Time of Uncertainty An Appraisal of the First Fifty Years of Independence and Prospective for the next Fifty Years in the Commonwealth Caribbean: the Jamaican Experience. The Launch takes place on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 10 am at the SALISES Conference Room 1.
