Examinations

Examinations are in two parts: part I and Part 2 (Final)

The Part I Examination is held at the end of the first year and comprises:
A written paper and an oral examination in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and related disciplines in the basic sciences;

The written paper consists of four questions each marked out of 25 with a range of marks from 11 to 14 (closed marking)

11 a poor fail
12 a fail
13 a pass
14 a good pass

The Part 2 Examination consists of:
a) two written papers;
b) a clinical examination which will include presentation and discussion of Obstetrical and Gynaecological cases;
c) an oral examination.

The written papers consists of four questions each marked out of 25 with a range of marks from 11 to 14 (closed marking)

12 a fail
13 a pass
14 a good pass

The Part 2 Examination must be taken within one year of the submission of the project report or case book.

The Clinical
The clinical consists of cases presented to the candidate for discussion. The Examiner will present the case painting a part of the history and then ask the candidate what further information they would need. The discussion is designed to test the candidate’s ability to think like a consultant and to display knowledge at that level in the proper management of the case. During the examination the candidate may be asked to demonstrate clinical signs on the patient. The examination lasts for forty minutes and during this time the candidate may be asked to see two or three cases. The examiners will be alerted by the invigilators as to when 10, 20, 30 and 40 minutes has transpired. At each 10 minute interval the examiners will change.

Each clinical is scored out of 60 and the average score used to determine the result

28 a clear fail
29 a fail
30 a pass
31 a good pass
32 an excellent pass


The Oral
The orals consists of 10 minutes obstetrics and 10 minutes gynaecology each done by a different examiner.

The orals is scored out of 20 for each section and the average score used to determine the total

8 a poor fail
9 a fail
10 a pass
11 a good pass
12 an excellent pass

A candidate can only pass if he/she passes the clinicals and achieves a minimum of 150 total
