As Chief Scientific Officer, Mr. Camilo Trench has varying duties at the lab. These include facilitating and coordinating various research projects of UWI and visiting scientists, data collection for the lab's monitoring projects and coordination of Educational and Outreach activities. In addition, he functions as Assistant Safety Manager and Chamber Operator for the Hyperbaric Chamber and as the lead investigator for the Jamaican Coastal Restoration projects (Coastal Nursery Project and Critical Coastal Areas Restoration Project).
Before joining the Centre, Mr. Trench served as a High School science teacher and a national training facilitator in Environmental Awareness and the Flora and Fauna of Jamaica. He also has experience in aquaculture as a shrimp hatchery technician and manager. He assumed the position as Scientific Officer at the Port Royal Marine Laboratory and later transitioned to DBML as Chief Scientific Officer.
Mr. Trench earned a BSc in Zoology and Botany and later pursued a Master of Science in Tropical Ecosystems Assessment and Monitoring from the University of the West Indies. Being a member of the Jamaica Coral Reef Monitoring Network and giving service to the National Ramsar Committee, he has been widely exposed to Integrated Coastal Zone Management. However, his primary research interest is in the area of Coastal Restoration and Rehabilitation. With his inception of a coastal forest nursery, he pioneered the current coastal restoration initiatives in Jamaica and continues to provide consultation to steer government and NGO projects island-wide.
