Raising Achievement Workshop

THEME: PROMOTING EQUITY, ACCESS & RELEVANCE IN CHILDREN'S EDUCATIONNathan Ebanks Foundation in collaboration with RBC and RBTT presents a special education workshop entitled Raising Achievement, Closing the gaps on April 18, 19 and 21. The first two days will be held at the Terra Nova Hotel and on the last day, it will take place at the Ritz Carlton Golf and Spa Resort in St. James.The main presenter will be Mrs. Kelly King from the Gurian Institute and the keynote speaker will be Mr. Ruel Reid, Principal of Jamaica College and Chairman of National Council on Education. Other presenters include Mrs. Joan Ernandez, from UWI's Department of Special Education, Mrs. Coretta Brown - Johnson, School Psychologist/ Behaviour Modifiation Specialist, Mrs. Gemma Gibbon, Child Development/ Art Therapist, and Mrs. Margaret Chin from the Mico University College's Department of Special Education.The purpose of the workshop is to focus attention on the gender differences in educating boys and girls, and aims to provide teachers and parents with new insights into the changing demands of teaching the genders. This workshop is grounded in recent neuroscience about the male-female brain differences, and will help unlock the surprising secrets of the male brain to help teachers understand what makes boys tick. Mrs. Gemma Gibbon
Bio: 

<p>Mrs. Gemma Gibbon is Child Development Psychologist and an Art Therapist. She was born and raised in the United Kingdom, and relocated to Jamaica in 2007 with her Jamaican-born husband Glen and their three children. She is a qualified and experienced Child Development Psychologist, and holds a MSc. in Psychology of Child Development (with a concentration in Art Therapy) University of Central Lancashire, Lancashire, England, A Higher Diploma in Child Psychology (Distinction) The National Study College, Hertfordshire, England and a BSc. In Psychology and Counselling (First class) Roehampton University, London, England. She is currently pursuing an MSc. in Education.</p><p><br />Since 2007, Mrs. Gibbon has been providing support to teachers, parents and children in Jamaica in various areas including:</p><p><br /> Behavioral interventions for preschool and school age children;<br /> Emotional concerns and breaking habitual behavior;<br /> Classroom and student assessment;<br /> Identifying special needs in children;<br /> Managing children with ADHD and all other disorders and challenges<br /> Learning and motivation;<br /> Positive and Effective Parenting skills</p><p><br />Mrs. Gibbon is a passionate advocate for children.</p>

Mrs. Joan Spencer - Ernandez
Bio: 

<p><br />Mrs. Joan Spencer-Ernandez is a Lecturer in Special Education Department, University of the West Indies. She spent seven years as the Testing and Measurement Specialist as a member of the Project Implementation Unit in the Caribbean Centre of Excellence for Teacher Training (CCETT) UWI. While in the CCETT Project, she developed the first regional test of reading standards administered to students in grades 1 to 3 in eight Caribbean countries. The test was based on a common set of standards published in The Caribbean Standards for Reading and Writing (2003), also developed by her. Mrs. Spencer-Eranadez is a trained teacher and she holds a B.Sc. Degree (Hons.) in Varying Exceptionalities and a Masters Degree in Reading and Learning Disabilities, with an emphasis on Testing and Measurement, from Teacher’s College, Columbia University, new York. She is currently completing Doctorial Studies at the UWI.</p>

Mrs. Coretta Johnson
Bio: 

<p>Behavioural Psychologist<br /><br />Mrs. Brown-Johnson has been in the youth services field for over fifteen years. She has worked as a government consultant for both the previous and present administration in an educational support capacity, as advisor and by providing expertise in other areas and services. She is currently the School Psychologist for Sts. Peter and Paul Preparatory School, heading the Guidance Department, and is the founder of a non-profit organization 3PM which specializes in youth services, assessment and behaviour modification intervention and treatment, and other services. 3pminternationalfoundation.com. Mrs. Brown-Johnson has worked with Jamaican institutions island-wide from the primary through to the college level and also lectures at the Edna Manley College in Cultural Therapy and Dance History.</p>

Mrs. Margaret Chin
Bio: 

<p>Mrs. Chin is a Special Education Lecturer in the Department of Special Education at the Mico University College, and a part-time Lecturer at the University of the West Indies. Her education background includes a certificate in Early Childhood Education, Diploma in Counselling, BSc. In Counselling, MSc in Special Education and she is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education at University of Sheffield in England through its Caribbean Distance Education Programme.</p><p>Mrs. Chin is an advocate for children with disabilities and other special needs and has more than 15 years experience in working with students who require remedial support, assessing their needs and providing them with differentiated instruction. She also has extensive community based experience working with teachers through workshops and seminars in literacy and numeracy instruction for a number of national and regional organizations, providing them with skills in developing appropriate reading and mathematics materials.</p>
