Education Forum

The School of Education will be hosting its annual Forum on Education on Tuesday February 5, 2013 at 5.00 p.m. under the theme - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM):  For Innovation and Economic Prosperity.  STEM is an approach that emphasizes the use of innovation and creativity to address economic problems. The forum will seek to address pertinent issues on these four integrated subject areas.Special guests include The Hon. Phillip Paulwell, Minister of Science, Technology, Energy & Mining and Mrs. Elaine Foster-Allen, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education.

<p><img src="http://jamaica.kdid.org/sites/jamaica/files/events/images/rlevy.gif" alt="Robert Levy" title="Robert Levy" width="100" height="99" style="margin-left: 1px; margin-right: 1px; margin-top: 2px; margin-bottom: 2px; border: 1px solid black; float: left;" />Robert Levy is widely regarded as one of Jamaica's most remarkable entrepreneurs and is the Chairman of the National Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology.</p><p>Levy is also known as the Chairman of Jamaica Broilers, which he joined in 1959, one year after the official formation of the company.&nbsp; He played a lead role in guiding this country’s pioneer commercial producer of poultry, Jamaica Broilers, into becoming the Caribbean’s most successful agro-processing entities – one which officially benchmarks its operations against efficiency levels achieved by international producers in the USA, and which has significant interests in the energy sector.</p><p>He&nbsp; is a graduate of the Harvard Business School, where he completed the Owner/President Management Programme. He received his earlier education at DeCarteret College and Jamaica College.</p><p>In October 2002, Robert Levy was awarded the National Honour of the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander (CD) for his contribution to the development of the livestock industry in Jamaica. On March 29, 2008, he received the honorary degree of Master of Arts Honoris Causa from the Caribbean Graduate School of Theology in recognition of his exemplary life as a family man, in business, in church and in the society at large. In August 2009, Robert Levy was conferred with an Honorary Degree - Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) from the Northern Caribbean University for his significant contribution to nation building.</p>

Mr. Hawthorne Watson

<p><img src="http://jamaica.kdid.org/sites/jamaica/files/events/images/hwatson.jpg" alt="Mr. Hawthorne Watson" title="Hawthorne Watson" width="200" height="200" style="border: 1px solid black; float: left; margin: 1px;" />Mr. Watson, Acting Executive Director at the Scientific Research Council, holds the distinction of being the first man to graduate from UWI with a First Class Honours in Pure &amp; Applied Chemistry; a double major.&nbsp; Having received an American Foundation Scholarship, he pursued the MSc. in Organic Chemistry and was the first scientist to establish and publish (Thesis: Extractives from a Jamaican Medicinal Plant and a chemical journal) The Structure of Cannabitriol; the first compound to be identified with three OH groups in a widely researched plant of forensic and medicinal importance.</p><p>During his tenure at&nbsp; College of Arts Science and Technology (CAST); (now University of Technology), his achievements included co-founding the Chemical Technology Programme.</p><p>Leaving CAST, he entered the industrial arena where he held positions of Production Manager, Plant Manager, Group Technical Manager and Operations Manager before joining the staff at SRC.<br /><br />Among other things at SRC he: founded The Inventors/Innovations Association; designed and pioneered the Science &amp; Technology Education Unit;&nbsp; introduced the Industrial Summer Attachment Programme for Science Teachers;&nbsp;&nbsp; introduced the concept of Technology Packages; drafted the Intellectual Property Rights Policy (IPR) for the Council; authors and co-produces the Annual Report; chairs the Scientific &amp; Technical Information Network (STIN); is a member of the Advisory Council on the National Information System (ACNIS).</p><p>As a representative of SRC, Mr. Watson has made presentations in several other Caribbean territories in addition to chairing the Annual General Meetings of the 16-member Caribbean Energy Information System (CEIS), headquartered at the Council.</p>

She is working to create a paradigm shift in industry by the use of technology in the energy and utilities industries.</p><p>For the last 15 years, Simmons has worked in the enterprise software industry for companies such as Expedia.com, Oracle Corporation, Saba Software, and i2 Technologies, helping large multinational companies deploy software technology to support their business.</p><p>She serves on the board of FIRST Robotics in North Texas, where she has served as an Executive Advisory Board member for the last two years. As a part of her role as Chairwoman of the Women’s Network, she works with Siemens’ female employees across the world to help implement regional or local programs of interest. Simmons has received several accolades including:</p><ul><li>2012 Visionary for new Siemens USA Veterans Training Initiative</li><li>2011 Visionary for new Science Day Initiative with Elementary and Middle Schools</li><li>2010 Catalyst and Champion for $40M Software Grants to University of Technology, Jamaica</li><li>2009 Catalyst and Champion for a $118M Software Grant for Northern Caribbean University, Manchester, Jamaica</li><li>&nbsp;2009 Founder and Chairwoman of the Siemens PLM Women’s Technology Network</li><li>2008 Technology All Star Award Winner – National Women of Color Organization</li><li>2002 i2 Product Marketing “Excellence in Outbound Customer Service” Award</li></ul><p>Simmons is a social scientist and has a degree in Sociology and Marketing.</p>

Dr. Halden Morris

He is former head of the Institute of Education at UWI and previously taught at the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) and Southern Illinois University, before going to UWI in 1991.<br /><br />Dr. Morris received a diploma in engineering technology from the University of Technology, Jamaica in 1973, and a diploma in education in electrical technology education from the University of Western Ontario, Canada in 1975.</p><p>&nbsp;He earned B.Sc. (Honors) in electrical engineering technology, M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in vocational education from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, USA.<br />He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and a member of the Association for Career and Technical Education, the Jamaica Association of Technical and Vocational Education and Training, and the Jamaica Institute of Engineers.</p><p>Dr. Morris is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Jamaica and is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).&nbsp; He has&nbsp; published extensively on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and is the holder of a United States small entity patent. His primary areas of research and publication are in educational technology and TVET. His research interests include educational needs of industries, Educational interaction with industrial organizations and ICT in education.<br /><br /><br />&nbsp;<br /></p>

Dr. Disraeli Hutton

He holds a Master degree in Career and Technology Education and a Ph.D. in Higher Educational Administration and Supervision from Bowling Green State University, Ohio.&nbsp; He continues to conduct research in the areas of education transformation, school leadership, financing education, technical vocational education and training and education and development.</p><p>&nbsp;His work experience spans both the private and public sectors. This includes teaching in the public school system for many years. Dr. Hutton taught at CAST, now the University of Technology and he also lectures in the HRD programme currently being offered by the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, University of the West Indies (UWI). Dr. Hutton worked at Jamalco as the Training Director and the HEART Trust/National Training Agency as Chief Technical Director. He has done consultancy work with various government and private entities in the areas of training and education, programme design and implementation, production system evaluation, among others. During 2006, Dr. Hutton worked as Executive Director of the Educational Transformation Team (ETT), which is responsible for the restructuring of the public education system in Jamaica. Two years ago, he worked with a team of consultants from the UWI to address the problem of absenteeism affecting over 100 primary and all-age schools in Jamaica. Currently, he is involved in consultancy work related to the education system in a number of countries in the region. His substantive post is lecturer in the Department of Educational Studies, School of Education, Faculty of Humanities and Education, University of the West Indies.</p>

Dr. Paul Aiken

<p><img src="http://jamaica.kdid.org/sites/jamaica/files/events/presenters/images/Pau... alt="Dr. Paul Aiken" title="Dr. Paul Aiken" width="111" height="130" style="border: 1px solid black; float: left; margin: 1px;" />Senior Engineer and Head of the Electronics Unit in the Department of Physics, at The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona, Dr Paul Aiken, has been elevated to the grade of Senior Member in the Institute of Electric and Electronics Engineering (IEEE),&nbsp; the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.<br /><br />Only eight per cent (8%) of IEEE’s approximately 400,000 members hold the grade of Senior Member, which requires extensive experience, and reflects professional maturity and documented achievements of significance. Dr Aiken is the second member of staff at The UWI, Mona to achieve this honour, the other being Dr. Halden Morris, senior lecturer in the Institute of Education.<br /><br />Paul Aiken has coordinated the development of engineering at the Mona campus and has teaching and research duties in electronics engineering and physics. He recently served as vice-chair of the IEEE Jamaica section.<br /><br />He holds a PhD and a MSc in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, New York, and a MPhil in Physics from The UWI. Over the years, he has held several engineering positions in Jamaica and the USA including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) engineer at UWI and at Columbia University, and a Senior Test Engineer at Intel Corporation. As a test engineer, Dr Aiken&nbsp; lead international teams of engineers to design factory ready equipment for testing Intel latest&nbsp; microprocessors, and developed practical solutions for solving high speed signal and power integrity issues.</p>
