The former Chief Education Inspector, Mrs. Elaine Foster Allen, launched an EduExchange e–discussion that examined how schools in challenging contexts could be transformed such that students' performance improved. The aim of the e–discussion was to identify the issues, and suggest strategies for improvement of schools. The summary below reflects the contributions of members, including their suggestions and experiences.

Jamaica Partners for Educational Progress Community of Practice (CoP) Launch

On Wednesday, December 15th at the Knutsford Court Hotel the Jamaica Partners for Educational Progress CoP will celebrate its official launch! The launch will include a welcome and introduction from Pamela Bridgewater, U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica and a public lecture on Promoting Early Literacy in At-Risk Students. The lecture will be delivered by Mr. Earl M. Phalen, who has played a leading role in improving the lives of children through the promotion of early literacy and school readiness, and the provision of after school and summer programmes.

Welcome to the inaugural Partners for Educational Progress CoP EduExchange! The online discussion forum will start Tuesday, September 21, 2010, and will address the role of the school in improving student performance in challenging contexts. Elaine Foster Allen, Immediate Past Chief Inspector of Education and Principal Shortwood Teachers' College, will moderate the three-day discussion, which covers the following topics:

  • Raising teacher expectations of children in high poverty schools
  • Curriculum support for under-performing children
  • Engaging with families in difficult circumstances

Day 1: Raising Teacher Expectation of children in high poverty schools

On the first day participants will exchange ideas on the role of teacher expectation in the performance of students in high poverty schools.

Day 2: Curriculum Support for under-performing children

On day 2 we will turn our attention to the operational issues.

Day 3:

Acknowledging that research has shown that parental involvement in their child’s education is a critical link in achieving high quality education and a safe and disciplined environment for every child efforts and plans have been made to raise the level of parental involvement across schools in Jamaica.
