The Jamaica Partners for Educational Progress wishes for all its members a productive 2011.

For our first EduExchange discussion for 2011 (February 1-3), we have chosen to examine the performance of our children in the Grade Four Literacy Test. The data shows that in spite of a raft of interventions over the more than a decade of this Test, we are still about 15 per cent short of our national target of 85 per cent mastery by 2010 and ultimately to have all Jamaican children master this Test.

Share your views with us; tell us what is happening in your school and classroom to move children from non-mastery to mastery. Join us as three of our experienced educators and literacy specialists help us identify the and sharpen our skills to address them.

The Role of the School in Improving Student Performance in Challenging Contexts

The Role of the School in Improving Student Performance in Challenging Contexts Welcome to this first EduExchange discussion on the Role of the School in Improving Student Performance in Challenging Contexts. As the former Chief Inspector of Education, I believe that schools play an ever expanding and important role in the social transformation of Jamaica. Schools are often expected in Jamaica to do so much more than impart knowledge; they are expected to mould and improve upon the children who enter their doors.

Welcome to the inaugural Partners for Educational Progress CoP EduExchange! The online discussion forum will start Tuesday, September 21, 2010, and will address the role of the school in improving student performance in challenging contexts. Elaine Foster Allen, Immediate Past Chief Inspector of Education and Principal Shortwood Teachers' College, will moderate the three-day discussion, which covers the following topics:

  • Raising teacher expectations of children in high poverty schools
  • Curriculum support for under-performing children
  • Engaging with families in difficult circumstances

We look forward to your participation! Please contact Carol Watson Williams, CoP Facilitator, with any questions or comments.
