Course Objectives-

This class is designed as an introduction to modern palaeontological methods and research as well as an overview of the most important invertebrate fossil groups. The practical part of the course will first cover the morphology of groups within the major phyla. Later on in the semester, we will do some basic measuring, statistical and phylogenetic analyses.

The lecture portion of the course is designed to introduce the most important topics in palaeobiology. We'll look at quantitative approaches to problems in palaeontology and at the application of palaeontologic data to research in geology and evolutionary biology.

Evaluation
Course Marks will be based on a Practical Final (during reading week) and a Theory Final each worth 50% of your final mark. Past papers are available in the Main Office of the DOGG.
Lectures
Powerpoint presentations of each lecture along with the most important figures and graphs from each day will be available on the course homepage. Suggested readings for each lecture or practical are listed on the course syllabus. Other suggested readings will be noted during the course of the semester and will be available in the Main Office of the Department of Geography and Geology.
Tutorials

During the 2nd half of the semester I will schedule some tutorial sessions to review key portions of the lecture and practical part of the course.
